iPhone 4 Pre-Order Sold Out!

iPhone 4 SOLD OUT
It’s official (according to BGR and Engadget), the iPhone 4 pre-orders have been completely sold out and anyone who was actually able to place an order after 1:30p Pacific will get their iPhone between June 25th and July 5th. If you were unable to pre-order, you still might be able to walk in on launch day without a pre-order and get one of the unallocated units… good luck if you try!

Engadget was able to obtain the following confirmation from AT&T:

“Because of the incredible interest in iPhone 4, today was the busiest online sales day in AT&T history. As of Tuesday afternoon, customers who preorder iPhone 4 moving forward will receive their device on June 25 or later, depending on when the order is placed. We’ll email customers with confirmation once their order is placed, and again when it ships. In addition, we will have devices available on a first-come, first-serve basis in our stores beginning on June 24.”

WWDC Keynote wrap-up

WDC '10 Steve Jobs took the stage in his typical fashion wearing Levi’s 501 jeans, a St. Croix black mock turtleneck and New Balance 991 shoes to a standing ovation then WWDC started with his typical phrase: “It’s great to be here!”

Then the Reality Distortion Field spun up as Job’s provided some updates concerning iPad sales starting with an email quote he received stating that the iPad was indeed magical:

“I was sitting in a cafe with my iPad, and it got a girl interested in me. Now that’s what I call a magical device!”

iPad sales have topped 2M units sold which is equivalent to an iPad sale every 3 seconds. Since this is the Developer Conference Job’s made sure to mention that there are now 8.5K iPad-specific apps with 35M downloads representing 17 apps per iPad. Wolfram Associates, the developer of The Elements, earned more on the first day than 5 years of google ads on periodictable.com.

New Media Companies Turning Traditional Media Outlets Upside Down

Two news items caught my eye Friday in gadget news.

First, Apple iTunes increased its dominance as the top domestic music e-tailer. iTunes overtook Walmart in 2008 when it reached 21.42% and now iTunes has captured 26.65% of the overall market. Walmart had 14.99% in 2008 and dropped to 12.54% and retains the second spot. The download music segment represents a quarter of all domestic music sales.

iTunes did not exist just 7 years ago. Originally launched only on the Apple platform in April of 2003, the Windows version did not appear until October. Not remembering when I started to make the switch to digital downloads from CD media, I pulled up my account history. My first purchase took place November 1, 2003 when I purchased Harder to Breathe by Maroon 5 and It’s My Life by No Doubt.

Jon Stewart asks Apple to be reasonable

Just in case you haven’t seen Jon Stewart’s take on Apple’s, let’s say, lack of judgement, then you should take 5 minutes to watch this. It really sums up very well how as companies become larger and more successful, even popular, that they seem to start ‘losing their marbles’. They seem to forget what it was like when they were starting up and competing against the unforgiving giants. Instead, they become them. The group-think becomes stronger and then they make decisions out of misplaced fear. *end soapbox rant*!

Apple employee loses next gen iPhone, Gizmodo gets it, dissects it

This has to be the story of the week so far – a new prototype Apple iPhone model (let’s say the 4G) was accidentally left in a pub, picked up by a random stranger, who tried to return it to Apple and then eventually sold it to Gizmodo for $5000.

Gizmodo has run a number of stories including: how the phone was lost, details and photos, and even a dissection of the device.

Here are some of the stats on what’s new in this iPhone:

  • front-facing webcame
  • micro-sim slot
  • seems to be a higher-res screen (maybe 960×640)
  • larger battery

Review: PixyMe iPhone app

Chicago company Tukaiz has turned its image personalization technology into the obvious consumer application, an iPhone app! Called PixyMe, this mobile app lets you place names into images and photographs, and in some cases with a great degree of realism.

We took the app through its paces, and found it easy to use, smooth and all without following any directions. The image you see was produced in a matter of seconds using PixyMe.

You can e-mail images you create as well as post images to your Facebook account. One nice additional feature is the ability to create and send postcards (get them printed and mailed out by PixyMe for $1.99) with both front and back images and decorations. Now you don’t even need to go looking for postcards when you’re on vacation – just take a photo wherever you are and create customized postcards every time.

For $1.99, this is a fun and useful app, and if you’re an avid postcard’er, we totally recommend it.

(Disclaimer: Gizmos for Geeks received a complimentary review copy of this product.)

Multitasking finally comes to the iPhone OS

iphone os 4 multitaskingAs anticipated, iPhone OS 4 will get multitasking. Apple is touting over 100 new features as well in this version. iPhone OS 4 will work with iPhone 3G and 3GS and iPod touches from late 2008 and newer. The iPad will get this update in Fall.

What else comes to your iPhone this summer? Of note: a unified e-mail inbox, iBooks, and folder organization for apps (at last). If you’re a developer, then you’ll get another way to monetize your apps via iAd, Apple’s new ad platform for iPhone apps.
