Remember that scene in Die Hard 4.0 when Matt Farrell uses the 5 series BMW to get in touch with the emergency services? OnStar offers you the chance to do just that without going out and buying a BMW with fancy optional extras – a few hundred dollars is all you need to get it installed in any car.

The new accessory, OnStar FMV is a rearview mirror wired up with all of the usual OnStar goodies. It costs $300 plus $100 to get it installed and it helps you with accidents, emergencies, security, navigation and breakdowns.

MiMedia Cloud Backup and StorageYet another consumer cloud storage provider, MiMedia, recently launched a new cloud-hosting plan that offers free 7 GB storage (presumably as a carrot to lure users into eventually signing up for their paid plans). Their next level up is a 250 GB option that costs $10 per month or $99 per year. They also have 500 GB and 1 TB plans.

Although I’m a bit surprised to see yet another entrant into an already crowded field, particularly one that starts off with a free plan, MiMedia includes some attractive features only found scattered across its competitors.

Vumber Gives You a Temporary Cell Phone Numbers

There are plenty of legitimate reasons why you’d want to have a second and/or temporary phone number, including having one to put on social networking sites, giving one out on nights out, or putting on a CraigsList or eBay ad. Then if things do go wrong, you can just get a new number without having to notify all your personal contacts.

Now there’s a solution even better than this – PalTalk have come up with Vumber. Vumber is a service that gives you a number that, when called, directs to your cell phone. The other caller never has to know your real number. If there is a problem, you can delete the number without hassle.

GMail Gets Background Sending, Saves You Time

To turn the feature on, just go to the Labs tab under Settings and enable Background Send. This one is a no-brainer. Just use it. I’m pretty sure this is one that will soon become a standard feature.

If you want an iPad with 3G but don’t want to pay the extra money then you can tether it to your iPhone and use your iPhone’s unlimited data plan. The app to do this is MyWi and allows you to use your iPhone as a 3G modem for your iPad.

If you hadn’t guessed by now, this only works on Jailbroken iPhones so there is a risk involved. The app costs $10 and comes with a 10 day free trial.
