CES 2011: Next version of Windows to run on ARM processors

Microsoft Windows logoMicrosoft announced that the next version of Windows will soon run on ARM processors, in addition of course to x86 chips from Intel and AMD.

So what’s an ARM processor anyway? Developed and licensed to other chip makers by ARM Holdings, it’s the most commonly used CPU in smartphones and tablets.

Get the picture now? Microsoft wants to make sure it doesn’t get left in the dust by the likes of Android, Symbian, iOS and the like.

eyeTV Lets You Watch and Record Broadcast TV on your Mac

Elegato’s EyeTV for Mac allows you to watch and record TV broadcast via standard signals onto your Mac. The signal accepted by the adaptors varies as there are a few different types to meet your needs. While the devices are priced between $100 and $200 depending on the version, it does mean that you don’t have to buy a separate TV for that room and so you can save yourself some dollars.

We’ll have a brief look at the different versions here.

Bits Limited Charging Station LPG3

Review: Bits Limited’ Charging Station automatically shuts off when devices are fully charged

Bits Limited Charging Station LPG3A few years ago, we featured the SmartStrip LCG3 from Bits Limited, a 10 outlet unit that detects whether or not you have something plugged is on or off and stops drawing power accordingly, thus reducing the ‘vampire load’.

Fast-forward to today. Bits Ltd sent us one of their latest products – the 10-outlet Charging Station (model LPG3E), which as the name suggests is geared to plugging in chargers. As we’re suckers for green, eco-conscious, power-saving gadgets, we had to accept.
I took this unit for a spin and found a lot to like.

Setup

There is some minor setup that involves calibrating the device based on the chargers that you have plugged in, but that took less than 5 minutes.

Gawker Media Compromised

Gawker compromised The Internet provided two security lessons this week…
1 — use hard passwords,
2 — use different passwords on all websites.

E-mail addresses and passwords from Gawker Media have been stolen for 200,000 1.4M registered users and are circulating on peer-to-peer networks after a weekend compromise. Gawker Media has warned users to change their passwords both at Gawker Media and at other sites where users utilized the same passwords.

Popular websites including Lifehacker, Gizmodo, Gawker, Jezebel, io9, Jalopnik, Kotaku, Deadspin and Fleshbot users were compromised where users were required to register, providing their e-mail address and a password, to leave comments. The emails and passwords were released by “Gnosis” in a 487MB file. Additionally, “gawker_redesign_beta.jpg” and Gawker’s server kernal versions have been included in the torrent.

The passwords were encrypted although it’s expected that password crackers are being worked overtime and the easy passwords have probably already been cracked.

In a proactive move, LinkedIn has reset passwords for users that have Gawker Media accounts requiring a change. Two thumbs up for LinkedIn from the Geeks… not so much for Gawker Media.

Because the Geeks recommend using hard passwords and different passwords for every website, you may ask how you keep track of all those passwords because that yellow sticky on the side of your monitor allows you to only write so many passwords on it. Instead of using the sticky, the Geeks recommend utilizing a password tool like 1Password (available on Mac/Windows/iOS) combined with DropBox to maintain your all your passwords wherever you have access to Dropbox and an installed copy of 1Password.

The company has developed a modular solar panel- square in shape and black in color- that will recharge your iPods, phones, and cameras using the freely available solar energy.

Death of The Video Rental Store

Death of Video Rental A few weeks ago, I was sitting at a traffic light by the Hollywood Video store near my home and glanced over at the empty parking lot. This was not an unusual sight because for years the parking lot at the Hollywood Video was always empty. But looking a bit closer, I realized the space was being gutted and prepped for an upcoming Advanced Auto Parts store. The Hollywood Video store was gone for good.

To be honest, I have not entered a video rental store in probably 10 years. But, I still felt a bit sad and nostalgic for all those Friday and Saturday nights back in the early 1990’s that I spent in the video store perusing the shelves for the newest flick with my boyfriend (who is now my wonderful husband). Rows and rows of videotapes, which eventually changed over to DVDs, were all lined up right at our fingertips. We really enjoyed going to the video store.

But then my husband and I stopped going to the video rental store. And it looks like everyone else stopped going too.
