CES 2010: Parrot Demos AR.Drone, RC Flying WiFi

parrot ar.drone rc flyerIn eye-catching demos reminiscent of WowWee’s Dragonfly in 2007, Parrot is showing off its AR.Drone which is a 4-propeller remote controlled flying ‘thing’. The AR.Drone features 2 cameras that you can view in real-time via WiFi, and also includes its own brain in the way of a Linux-based computer.

The AR.Drone will also ship with an augmented reality game, so you fly it as a virtual joystick of sorts. Parrot plans to offer up an iPhone app, but better yet, the source code as well so that hackers can develop even more interesting things for it. This may lead to a bright future for the AR.Drone.

Availability is tentatively March 5, but no word on pricing yet.

Viper Smart Start iPhone app – Remotely Start Your Car

Well your AT&T coverage and reliability may not be very good, but hey at least your iPhone is one amazing little smartphone. Automotive gadget maker Viper has taken advantage of that fact to create an iPhone app called Smart Start that pairs with one of their Remote Start products to let you start/stop/lock/unlock your car from your iPhone from virtually anywhere.

Before there were iPhones, Viper was making remote automobile starter systems that are installed in your car, and that you could then use the accompanying remote control to start your car from varying distances (some products are just local up to 2000 ft while others could go up to a mile). …

iLinc: iPhone app to control your INSTEON/X10 home automation devices remotely

Now that you have your home automation all tricked out, and you got yourself an iPhone, how do you control your HA system from your God-phone?! Not to worry, iLinc is an iPhone/iPod Touch app that lets you do just that.

For example, you can control up to 1000 INSTEON or X10 devices as well as up to 1000 ‘scenes’. You of course need some way to make your devices accessible to the Intenret, and either the ISY-99i controller or the INSTEON PowerLinc controller will do the trick.

There are 2 versions, the iLinc Lite can only control 1 device, but it’s enough to get you started testing. iLinc Pro will let you control all of your devices and also works with the USB/Serial PowerLinc.

By the way, this isn’t the only iPhone app available to control your home automation devices.

Sonos CR200, Wireless Controller

sonoscr200Sonos has a new product, a wireless controller for your Sonos system that lets you control all your music in any room from anywhere. The full-color, 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen CR200 lets you control any of your Sonos controllers. You can play your CDs, music on your computer(s) or even Internet Radio.

Let’s say you decide to come downstairs and had music playing in your bedroom, you can use your controller to turn that off and play it in the kitchen instead. You can browse through albums and stations, perform searches with the on-screen keyboard or build playlists.

Perhaps one of the most forward-thinking features is the ability to determine what Sonos zone the CR200 is controlling, so you can listen to different music in different parts of the house.

NTT DoCoMo tests out Wearable Remote Controls

Wrist watch remote control

NTT DoCoMo, a Japanese mobile operator, have been working on some wearable gadgets that can be programmed to react to your movements. Applications have been demonstrated where a user can simply ‘dart’ their eyes in order to fast forward to the next track on an MP3 player (might get some odd looks when you’re out in public) by sensing the electrical current produced by your eyeballs, and a wrist watch that allows wearers to use their arms as a programmable remote cotrol! NTT DoCoMo have also suggested that these may be adapted for mobile use to play video games, read their email and even shop online – watch this space!

Multi-Color Lightbulb With Remote

Multi-colored Lightbulb With Remote

Here at GizmosForGeeks we do occasionally like to feature one of those items that you really, really, don’t need but you are somehow drawn to buying it – the multi-color lightbulb with remote is one of them.

What does this one do? Well, it’s just a regular lightbulb on the surface, but if you delve deeper you will find that it is a lightbulb that provides a transition between 16 different colours via a very handy infrared remote. There’s also a (perhaps unnecessary) range of sequences for the lighting system – the remote can set the light to fade between colors or pause on colors with varying speeds and the usual flash/strobe/fade/smooth effects, along with the brightness adjuster.

You can perhaps imagine that this is a perfect lighting system for many occasions – parties, special events, or even for wooing that loved one. I would love to replace all the (10!) lights in my kitchen with them and make some kind of rave-kitchen, but at $49.99 a pop it’s going to look unlikely for the time being!

Gimme!
