Starbucks Free WiFi

Starbucks Tweet Starbuck tweeted today that coming July 1st, Starbucks will provide free, 1-click WiFi access… and right after Starbucks sent me my new Gold Card which provides 2 free hours of WiFi daily. You see, I have a slight problem and I use Starbucks as a productivity center away from home distractions usually once a week.

So, this doesn’t affect my iPad usage as I have no-click WiFi connectivity at Starbucks stores now, but one-click, no registration WiFi connection will be welcome for laptop usage as I now have to login using an AT&T account. I say, about time Starbucks… weren’t really the leader on that idea!

While everyone’s excited about the free WiFi, Starbucks has also announced intentions to launch its own digital network to provide media company partners, including Yahoo!, WSJ, Zagat, NYT, USA Today and the free weekly iTunes pick download. Yahoo! will provide the portal while AOL will integrate local content from Patch in the Starbuck Digital Network. We’ll have to see when SDN launches how many people stick around the initial portal before VPNing to work or heading to blog on their sites.

Gina on Apple’s Advertising and Aesthetics

FaceTime Gina Trapani from LifeHacker fame wrote a thesis on Apple’s Advertising and Aesthetics on her blog called Smarterware. While we don’t typically talk about other people’s blog entries or opinions, Gina’s article explains how Apple sells product and is well worth a read.

The article, “Lessons from Apple on Advertising and Aesthetics“, describes Apple product advertising with a word or two speaking about aesthetics of Apple products. Her article is worth a read.

I wanted to expand on Gina’s article by mentioning how Steve Jobs’ presentations are Apple’s largest advertisement through his modus operandi as he steps on stage at a forum like WWDC to describe the latest “insanely great” products and features. Regardless of whether you are a Apple fanboy or not, if you remove your prejudices you must agree that Steve Jobs can present and speak better than any technology leader. Why is that?

WWDC Keynote wrap-up

WDC '10 Steve Jobs took the stage in his typical fashion wearing Levi’s 501 jeans, a St. Croix black mock turtleneck and New Balance 991 shoes to a standing ovation then WWDC started with his typical phrase: “It’s great to be here!”

Then the Reality Distortion Field spun up as Job’s provided some updates concerning iPad sales starting with an email quote he received stating that the iPad was indeed magical:

“I was sitting in a cafe with my iPad, and it got a girl interested in me. Now that’s what I call a magical device!”

iPad sales have topped 2M units sold which is equivalent to an iPad sale every 3 seconds. Since this is the Developer Conference Job’s made sure to mention that there are now 8.5K iPad-specific apps with 35M downloads representing 17 apps per iPad. Wolfram Associates, the developer of The Elements, earned more on the first day than 5 years of google ads on periodictable.com.

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference 2010 kick off

WDC '10 With roughly two minutes before Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference about to kick off with Steve Job’s keynote, some late breaking rumors have been hitting the crowd (which all either have a Macbook or iPad in their hands). You can follow live on Macrumor’s Live Coverage site.

As mentioned this morning, there might be one last “Get a Mac” commercial poking fun at the Gizmodo/Apple iPhone controversy. Not unexpected, but rumors of a new Apple TV being presented and previously unreleased rumors about iPhone OS 4 features including printing are emerging. Other expected announcements include a Mac Mini refresh, the latest versions of MacOS X, Safari and Xcode, iBooks subscription service, and Apple’s ‘Magic Trackpad’ or ‘Magic Slate’ release.

The Geeks will wrap-up the Keynote after Steve wraps it up.

Dell Enters Tablet Computer Market with the Streak

Dell announced that the Streak, a touch-screen tablet computer is real and will first see daylight in the UK next month (June) and later in the summer in the US to AT&T.

The Streak (once known as the Mini 5) is a 5″ screen with a Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU and running Google’s Android OS (not Chrome OS, by the way), and has WiFi and 3G network connectivity. …

Pre-Order Star Trek TNG DS9 PADD

Welcome to the future and the next evolution of the iPad by pre-ordering this Star Trek PADD (Personal Access Display Device). I’m not sure, but the PADD may not be ready for shipment until 2364 even though the site says it’s shipping in June 2010.

The Star Trek PADD is a large touchscreen display with minimalistic manual interface of one or two buttons much like the iPad. The design is but the tip of the iceberg however as the typical PADD can be used for anything from logging manifests, compiling duty rosters or diagnostic reports or seemly everything, entering personal data and access library computer systems.

I hope the PADD comes with an extra sarium krellide power cell!

HTML5 Video Adoption

As of May 2010, 26% of all web video is now available for playback in HTML5 using the H.264 format up from 10% on January 2010. This is a meteoric rise to adoption for a technology. Out of the sites that support HTML5, iPad users are detected and switched to an HTML5-compatible format. YouTube has even enabled that functionality on their embeds from other sites.

Apple iPad has forced rapid adoption of HTML5 video.

For most news type sites, only recent stories are available as most back library content has not been encoded to be used in HTML5. Another area lacking is that there is little HTML5 supported episodic content available from major TV networks. ABC has an app, but no full episodes are available from their website.

Power Bullet Charger

There’s nothing worse than a gadget with no power. Really, it’s a sad thing that provides Geeks like us an endless amount of content for our dreams. I shutter to think of a time where I forget to charge my iPad overnight for example… the limp and lifeless body of the iPad just laying in my arms with no chance of providing access to my books, photos, videos, magazines, productivity tools or even access to ABC reruns or any of my favorite apps. This is a dark and cold place that I don’t want to think about and as luck would have it, there are products like the Power Bullet Charger!

The unique aspect of this charger over other chargers is that you can use a standard outlet or car charger to charge 2 USB devices. Thinkgeek has these black beauties for under $15 so it’s within all Geek’s budgets!

Multitasking finally comes to the iPhone OS

iphone os 4 multitaskingAs anticipated, iPhone OS 4 will get multitasking. Apple is touting over 100 new features as well in this version. iPhone OS 4 will work with iPhone 3G and 3GS and iPod touches from late 2008 and newer. The iPad will get this update in Fall.

What else comes to your iPhone this summer? Of note: a unified e-mail inbox, iBooks, and folder organization for apps (at last). If you’re a developer, then you’ll get another way to monetize your apps via iAd, Apple’s new ad platform for iPhone apps.

If you’d like to see Steve Jobs’ full keynote, you can at Apple’s website.
