Samsung YX-M1Z Helix XM2go Portable Satellite Radio/MP3 Player

Samsung YX-M1Z Helix XM2go Portable Satellite Radio/MP3 Player

The next step in the evolution of Satellite Radio/MP3 players is the latest portable being pushed by XM Radio. [Practically the same player is actually being sold by Pioneer as well (it’s called the Inno).] The Helix gives you access to 170 channels of XM Radio, *plus* a GB of storage space that can be used to store MP3s and WMAs, *and* record live XM radio for playback at a later time. 1 GB of storage translates into roughly 50 hours of play time, which is pretty considerable. This is all featured in a lightweight palm-sized unit with a 180×180 full-color TFT screen. If XM could figure out how to match the price of iPods on a byte by byte basis, then they could have an iPod-killer on their hands. Until then, it’s a Nano-sized player with the huge feature of being able to play XM radio.

Neuros Recorder 2 owners — Do not upgrade your PSP to Version 2.7

Bad Sony bad… Sony’s latest firmware upgrade causing problems with Neuros’ RC2 product.

Sony has recently offered a firmware upgrade for the PSP from Version 2.6 to Version 2.7. We donÂ’t think Sony did this on purpose, but, for now, PSPs with the upgraded firmware wonÂ’t play files recorded with the Recorder 2. A second result of this issue is that any files you may have recorded previously with the Recorder 2 would need to be converted to play on PSPs having the upgraded Version 2.7 firmware.

Hack your iPod, Play Doom

Bet you never thought of this. With a little (ok, sometimes a lot) tweaking, you can download subway maps, or Merriam-Webster’s pocket dictionary to your iPod, use it to track your running progress, find dates (yes, find dates), and best of all, play Doom! The Doom thing requires that you wipe your Apple firmware and install Linux, but Doom, you get to play Doom. Naturally, being Linux, you can install all kinds of apps on there, like lots of other games, Wikipedia, and even a basic Unix shell. Nice overview article here, but check out iPodLinux.org for all of the juicy details on how to void your iPod warranty. Sorry, I phrased that badly… I meant to say: improve your iPod. 😉

Another One Bites the Dust: R.I.P. Gizmondo

Gizmondo Another gizmo company who underdelivered is apparently no more. The Geeks expect the domains for gizmondo.com and their parent company of tigertelematrics.com to be up for sale sooner than later as neither are responding today.

In fact, Windows for Devices speculates that “Gizmondo Europe, maker of the eponymously named Windows CE-based Gizmondo gaming device, and parent company Tiger Telematics, reportedly have closed up shop.” MSN Mobiles reported that April 16th, 2006, the Gizmondo store closed their doors on Regent Street in London.

GamePark GP2X

GamePark GP2X

Since we’re halfway through this month’s contest, we figured we would feature the sponsored gizmo of the month: the GamePark GP2X! You better check your current geek credits and make sure to participate in the site to obtain a couple tickets to try to win this sweet gizmo.

The GP2X is the hottest handheld system for geeks as the unit is priced right, can use regular AA batteries and is open source! That’s right, the GP2X runs off Linux, but if you didn’t want to know that… you couldn’t tell with the interface. These units can only be imported (check out the GIMME! link or the GP2X Shop).

The geeks got their hands on a review copy and we’ve posted our review here.

RIM to launch Blackberry in China

RIM, the Canadian firm that brought us the Crack… uhh, Blackberry, announced that they are set to launch their service in China by approximately mid-year. They are going to partner with China Mobile, which is the largest cellular telecom in the world. Interestingly enough, not too long ago, China Unicom, a competing telco, launched their version of the Blackberry service, appropriately (or not) called the Redberry. RIM could have an interesting fight on their hands, but with an opportunity to get themselves out of the hole they dug by not paying NTP on time.
