Was Steve Jobs ranting about Google and Android or simply defending iOS?

Hit play on the YouTube video (it’s just audio) and listen to Steve Jobs defend iOS’s ‘closed’ nature versus Google and Android’s ‘open’, and as he put it, fragmented approach. It’s quite characteristic of a company having a healthy fear of their competition. After all, it wasn’t that long ago that Apple was dominating the sleek, sexy smartphone market, while Android was merely talk and slideshows.

But today, Android is chalking up major wins because of its ‘open’ nature that has it working on numerous devices from many handset makers and even more crucially on many different carriers. Notice how Jobs failed to mention that little point. He also questions the numbers (of Android handsets sold), when a more astute observation would be how quickly Android adoption is occurring. But I’m sure he knows that fully well and this is just part of his dilemma. …

Microsoft announces a boatload of Windows Phone 7 handsets

Windows PhoneMicrosoft has launched its latest mobile OS incarnation, dubbed Windows Phone 7, with a flourish – a slew of new phones by different vendors on multiple carriers.

Europe and Asia get these handsets first on Oct 21, while the US will follow in Nov. There will be 9 new handsets from HTC, Dell, Samsung and LG that will end up on carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, Vodafone and TELUS. Eventually, handsets will also make it to Sprint and Verizon in 2011 and over 60 carriers in 30 countries.

New Reports say iPhone heading to Verizon

iPhone on VerizonDo you remember that nursery rhyme “Polly put the kettle on, Sukey took it off again”? The Verizon/iPhone saga reminds me of that. Well it’s back on again. This time there are multiple sources saying the iPhone is coming to Verizon in early 2011.

If you’re an AT&T iPhone user who is planning to jump over, keep at least 2 things in mind:

  • You won’t be able to use data and speak on the phone (voice) simultaneously. At least, not yet. The CDMA standard that both Verizon and Sprint use does not have that capability yet, although it’s being worked on. Of course, the carriers will need time to implement it.
  • The 1st round of Verizon iPhones will in all likelihood be 3G only and not be ready for the faster 4G network that Verizon is rolling out next year.

No Firefox for iPhone, but Firefox Home is the next best thing

Firefox HomeLove Firefox, but also love your iPhone. Wish there was a Firefox for the iPhone. Well sadly, according to Mozilla that doesn’t appear very likely.

However, there’s another app called Firefox Home that lets you get your Firefox history, bookmarks  and even open tabs on your iPhone. Firefox Home takes advantage of another Firefox tool called Sync that you can use to keep all of your various Firefox sessions nicely in touch with each other.

Car Home for Android improves your navigation

Car Home for Android

A new version of Car Home is out for Android 2.2.  It includes GPS navigation of course, but better still is voice-control and contacts list. The new version allows for more customization.

Although Google says its only available for Droid and the Nexus One, users (in the comments) are noting how they have gotten it to work on different handsets. Your mileage may vary of course.

iPhone Spy Stick recovers your data

iPhone Spy StickLabeled a ‘spy stick’, it’s easy to forget that you can use this little gadget for positive reasons like recovering your lost data off of your iPhone. The iPhone Spy Stick is a USB forensic tool that works simply by connecting it to your iPhone.

It can download deleted text messages, call history, view web history and even download pictures and voice memos and even map history.

The version for iOS 4 will be released next month (Oct).
