Microsoft announces a boatload of Windows Phone 7 handsets

Windows PhoneMicrosoft has launched its latest mobile OS incarnation, dubbed Windows Phone 7, with a flourish – a slew of new phones by different vendors on multiple carriers.

Europe and Asia get these handsets first on Oct 21, while the US will follow in Nov. There will be 9 new handsets from HTC, Dell, Samsung and LG that will end up on carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, Vodafone and TELUS. Eventually, handsets will also make it to Sprint and Verizon in 2011 and over 60 carriers in 30 countries.

Noteworthy in this new OS are what MS is calling ‘live tiles’ which are little real-time updating widgets that populate your home screen, with information such as # of messages, weather, calendaring, etc. You can also create your own custom tiles. The accompanying ad and slogan is “glance and go”. The ad below courtesy of Engadget shows off the new model:

You can see the available phones on MS’s website.

We have to give Microsoft credit for the blitzkrieg launch, as well as for building this OS from the ground-up and not trying to miniaturize desktop Windows yet again.
