WWDC Keynote wrap-up

WDC '10 Steve Jobs took the stage in his typical fashion wearing Levi’s 501 jeans, a St. Croix black mock turtleneck and New Balance 991 shoes to a standing ovation then WWDC started with his typical phrase: “It’s great to be here!”

Then the Reality Distortion Field spun up as Job’s provided some updates concerning iPad sales starting with an email quote he received stating that the iPad was indeed magical:

“I was sitting in a cafe with my iPad, and it got a girl interested in me. Now that’s what I call a magical device!”

iPad sales have topped 2M units sold which is equivalent to an iPad sale every 3 seconds. Since this is the Developer Conference Job’s made sure to mention that there are now 8.5K iPad-specific apps with 35M downloads representing 17 apps per iPad. Wolfram Associates, the developer of The Elements, earned more on the first day than 5 years of google ads on periodictable.com.

Sprint Activation System had issues Sunday

Sprint Activate Sprint’s activation system took a dirt nap on Sunday as the launch of the HTC EVO 4G looked to be a success. There were not really any reported long lines at stores which fulfilled pre-orders of the HTC EVO 4G, but Sprint has a different strategy than Apple’s funneling of customers through one building as Sprint sold the device at some of the 22,000 sales locations across the United States, including Sprint retail stores, national retail partners including RadioShack, Best Buy and Walmart, and indirect dealers.

Friday sales of the device marked the largest quantity of any single phone in Sprint’s history (previously held by Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre). What’s more impressive is that the total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined.

“HTC EVO 4G has more than lived up to our expectations that it would be one of the most anticipated technology products of the year,” said Kevin Packingham, senior vice president – Product Development for Sprint. “We are working closely with our partners at HTC to increase the supply and get EVO 4G into the hands of everyone who wants one as quickly as possible.”

Sprint’s HTC Evo goes on sale today

Sprint HTC EvoThe 1st WiMAX (802.16e 4G) Android device, the HTC Evo, goes on sale today on the Sprint Nextel network for $199 with a 2-yr contract. You can also purchase it from retailers Best Buy and Radio Shack.

The Evo has had a very positive reception since its unveiling in late March of this year. While the speed advantages are significant over current 3G networks (see video below), there is an additional cost of $10/month.  There is one additional benefit which AT&T and Apple have touted with their network and iPhones and that’s the ability to talk and use data services simultaneously. Expect this distinction to quickly fall away for Verizon and Sprint on their newer devices.

Multiple Device Charger Organizer

multiple device charger organizerHow does that saying go? If you’ve got 1 gadget, you’ve got 10? Maybe not, but you know what we’re getting at! Chances are you’ve easily got more than a few cell phones, iPods and PDAs competing for what seems like way too few power outlets.

Here’s a nice, tidy solution that lets you charge up to 3 gadgets simultaneously – the Desktop Family Charging Station. The nook in the rear keeps the adapter cords nice and clean and out of sight.

The Desktop Family Charging Station can also be wall mounted.

AT&T drops more than other providers

Gizmodo reports that while AT&T has actually improved performance around dropped calls lately, a survey from ChangeWave Research reports that 4.5% of calls placed on the AT&T mobile network are dropped which is three times as many as Verizon users.

AT&T and T-Mobile each share only a 23% customer approval rating which provides a good correlation with dropped calls.

Power Bullet Charger

There’s nothing worse than a gadget with no power. Really, it’s a sad thing that provides Geeks like us an endless amount of content for our dreams. I shutter to think of a time where I forget to charge my iPad overnight for example… the limp and lifeless body of the iPad just laying in my arms with no chance of providing access to my books, photos, videos, magazines, productivity tools or even access to ABC reruns or any of my favorite apps. This is a dark and cold place that I don’t want to think about and as luck would have it, there are products like the Power Bullet Charger!

The unique aspect of this charger over other chargers is that you can use a standard outlet or car charger to charge 2 USB devices. Thinkgeek has these black beauties for under $15 so it’s within all Geek’s budgets!

RedEye iPhone Remote ControlHere’s another product to turn your iPhone into a Universal Remote, the RedEye. RedEye’s device hooks up to the devices you want to control (like your TV, cable box, DVR, etc.), and the RedEye iPhone app (free download) controls them over your WiFi network.

As long as you have WiFi signal, you can control other RedEye-connected devices in other rooms in your house. Think about it – you forgot to turn off the TV. No need to go back to the living room – a few swipes and you’re done.
