Weekly Deals: IdeaPad Y560p, Dell XPS 17 Laptops & Apps For Cheap

Despite the emergence of touch-based tablets for casual computing, if you want to play the latest 3D games or have real productivity requirements, the best portable solution is still using a laptop.

Motorola Xoom and Apple iPad 2

Motorola Xoom vs Apple iPad 2 – A Spec-by-Spec Breakdown

Motorola Xoom and Apple iPad 2The tablet war rages on and it is still not completely clear who will be the eventual victor (perhaps no single vendor at all). Will it be Apple (and their new iPad 2) or Motorola and the Xoom, their new tablet running Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) or perhaps another up-and-comer? Of course, many have already anointed Apple as the winner, but it has been just over a year since the first iPad appeared, and hardly anything is ever decided in a year.

Although it may seem that cost would be the main factor in determining the champ here, these tablets are more complex than merely price tags. There are more than a few other interesting specs that might determine the winners and losers. We’ll start off with the size and go from there. Scroll down to the end to see a summary table.

Hitachi-LG Pack SSD and Blu-Ray into One Bay

Hitachi-LG has managed to come up with an improvement to one of their hybrid drives. They now offer a solution for customers where space and performance are equally key by combining an SSD with a Blu-Ray optical drive.

The idea behind it is that the Blu-Ray and SSD hybrid can fit into one bay and share just one SATA connector. Their initial model needed 2 SATAs but Hitachi-LG has now integrated them into one. This allows premium laptop makers to boost their storage memory and still include a Blu-Ray drive.

The drive is available in sizes from 8GB up to 256GB, but no word on price currently. The typical setup is to have the operating system and other key files to be held on the SSD with a different HDD in another bay being used for any user files. The drive will be hitting the shelves in May this year.

Firefox 4 Released, Boasts 6x Faster JavaScript Engine, Crash Protection, Much More

Firefox 4 Splash

Hot on the heels of Internet Explorer’s v9 release, Firefox 4 is out. The highly anticipated latest version of the Mozilla Foundation‘s flagship product, Firefox has a slew of new features, and in particular touts its huge boost in speed that puts it back on par with Google’s Chrome browser.

What’s New?
Firefox 4 boasts a slew of new features and you can read the full list in the release notes, while we point out the highlights:

  • A new JavaScript engine that is 6x faster than what’s in Firefox 3.6.
  • Firefox Sync is built-in. We talked about Weave before it became Sync.
  • Firefox now looks a lot of Chrome (and IE and Opera) in the way that it puts the tabs at the top and gets rid of a lot of the window’s extra footprint including menus and borders. It’s the in-way to build browsers until the next new thing comes along…
  • Protection against crashes by subsystems or plugins like Flash causing the whole browser to crash.
  • Panorama – a new visual overview of all open tabs, similar to some existing extensions for FF 3.x.

That is just a taste, and developers in particular will be chomping at the bit to test out some of the new HTML5 and CSS3 support, so look forward to even more websites moving into the new era as older browser fall by the wayside.

You can download Firefox 4 right now and add to the more than 11 million as of the time of this writing!
