LIVEdigitally Review: Moviebeam

LIVEdigitally Review: Moviebeam

Our friend, Jeremy, over at LIVEdigitally recently reviewed Moviebeam and Moviebeam HD. Here’s a snippet:

Per the company’s description, “Moviebeam is a brilliant new way to rent and watch movies at home. Get movies delivered directly to your TV — no cable, satellite, or computer is required. To me, Moviebeam is either the lazy man’s answer to Blockbuster, or, more likely, an early glimpse into the future of our soon-to-arrive “entertainment, anywhere, anytime, on-demand lifestyle.

Today, Moviebeam’s offering is, in a nutshell, a $199 set-top box that delivers up to 10 movies per week (it comes with 100 or so available to start!), available in an instantaneous on-demand offering at prices ranging from $1.99 to $3.99 per movie. All movies are available at either DVD or HDTV quality, and the box does not interfere with any other TV or Internet offerings in your household.

After some hands-on use, I have to say, the product is quite fun to use, and a welcome addition to my home. Especially if you ask my wife!

Check out the rest of the review on LIVEdigitally.

Update 5/13/2006: The good folks over at MovieBeam have informed us that if you enter the code PR49B at checkout, you will get the MovieBeam box for $49 instead of the usual $199.

ICEflow Personal Air Conditioner

ICEflow Personal Air Conditioner

Most IT geeks get put either in a cold server room location or the end office where the AC simply does not reach. My office represents the latter of these situations and when the temperature starts reaching 80 degrees outside, my office starts to warm up.

Sharper Image promises the ICEflow Personal Air Conditioner is the solution. While fans circulate air they do not lower the ambient temperature. The ICEflow claims that if your office heats up to 80 degrees, you will feel a 74 degree breeze comforting you and cooling you down.

Other similar gizmos require you to add ice but ICEflow uses the environmentally friendly Peltier Effect with electronics that remove heat from the water chamber to create the block of ice — without Freon, without refrigerants and without any need for window ventilation. Using only 10 watts, the gizmo is energy efficient too!

iSplash Rugged Splashproof Stereo Speaker System

iSplash Rugged Splashproof Stereo Speaker System

Continuing on the outdoor weekend theme from yesterday, here’s a boombox of sorts that can handle even getting splashed! You actually slip the iPod behind a waterproof gasket so the boombox can be splashed without harming your iPod! The iPod fits in the unit similar to how you would put tapes in an older boombox that supports tapes.

Tomorrow’s gadget we’ll get back to work.

ZipConnect 900MHz Wireless Outdoor Speakers

ZipConnect 900MHz Wireless Outdoor Speakers

It’s the weekend and time to move life to the outdoors for a couple of days! Of course, if you’re like me, I can’t quite sit still and in the quite and need to bring my tunes with me. If that sounds like you, Sharper Image has created a product that should work for you.

Using their ZipConnect technology, which allows you to connect any MP3 player – not just iPods, Sharper Image has created wireless outdoor speakers! Wireless solves the issue of having to run speaker wire outdoors and the outdoor speakers have a weatherproof case that could withstand some misting or indirect weather. The speakers only require batteries for power so you don’t have to worry about a power outlet either!

The price is a little steep, but this product fits the outdoor living but digital music loving niche perfectly.

Samsung YX-M1Z Helix XM2go Portable Satellite Radio/MP3 Player

Samsung YX-M1Z Helix XM2go Portable Satellite Radio/MP3 Player

The next step in the evolution of Satellite Radio/MP3 players is the latest portable being pushed by XM Radio. [Practically the same player is actually being sold by Pioneer as well (it’s called the Inno).] The Helix gives you access to 170 channels of XM Radio, *plus* a GB of storage space that can be used to store MP3s and WMAs, *and* record live XM radio for playback at a later time. 1 GB of storage translates into roughly 50 hours of play time, which is pretty considerable. This is all featured in a lightweight palm-sized unit with a 180×180 full-color TFT screen. If XM could figure out how to match the price of iPods on a byte by byte basis, then they could have an iPod-killer on their hands. Until then, it’s a Nano-sized player with the huge feature of being able to play XM radio.

Neuros Recorder 2 owners — Do not upgrade your PSP to Version 2.7

Bad Sony bad… Sony’s latest firmware upgrade causing problems with Neuros’ RC2 product.

Sony has recently offered a firmware upgrade for the PSP from Version 2.6 to Version 2.7. We donÂ’t think Sony did this on purpose, but, for now, PSPs with the upgraded firmware wonÂ’t play files recorded with the Recorder 2. A second result of this issue is that any files you may have recorded previously with the Recorder 2 would need to be converted to play on PSPs having the upgraded Version 2.7 firmware.
