Review: TrickleStar’s PC TrickleSaver and PC TrickleSwitch power conservation gadgets

TrickleStar is a tech company that makes a line of products geared to save you money with your energy usage. We reviewed 2 of their products that go hand in hand. The main product is the PC TrickleSaver. It basically works by monitoring your computer (via USB cable) to see if it’s on. If it’s not, then it kills the power to any devices you have plugged into the TrickleSaver. You can look at the TrickleSaver as a different take on similar power conservation products like the Smart Strip.

If you have numerous devices about your office and/or main computer that you never think about shutting down when not in use, then the TrickleSaver can save you some money, by automatically cutting the power to them. However, before you rush out and buy one, you should consider whether or not this makes sense for you.

Lacie’s Lacinema Black – Home Entertainment System

Lacinema Black

LaCie have released their new sleek multimedia entertainment system – LaCinema Black – a system that allows you to play movies, photos and music on your HDTV, play media from networked computers and generally just have a bit of fun with your multimedia. This comes in 2 versions – PLAY or RECORD. PLAY can simply play your movies whereas RECORD enables you to record, pause, rewind live TV. They both feature 1080i upscaling. The 500GB model comes in at $400 for the Play and $450 for the Record, and the 1TB comes in at $450 and $500 respectively (probably worth just buying the RECORD for the extra $50). If 1TB just isn’t going to be enough, both devices can be expanded via an external USB hard drive to give almost unlimited storage.

Speedo Aquabeat – Waterproof MP3 Player

Speedo Aquabeat

I do enjoy a good relaxing trip on my $multi-million yacht, listening to my music whilst basking in the glorious sunshine, that is until my iPod gets wet and dies on me… Yeah right. But the point is, it could happen and Speedo have engineered solution to this (or, most likely, a gizmo so people can listen to music whilst swimming) – a waterproof 2GB MP3 player that doesn’t actually look ugly! 2 GB of storage should keep you entertained for long enough with about 500 songs on it and has a nice subtle look to it, where most other waterproof devices can have very tacky color schemes and patterns.

The AquaBeat easily attaches to any swimwear items, and will float to the top of the water if dropped and comes in shades of green, pink or black. You also get all the usual usability as you would get with any other standard MP3 player.

More options for wireless (Bluetooth) earbuds/headphones

Following up yesterday’s entry on the DigiFi Opera S5 wireless earbuds, we thought it would be a good idea to give you a few more options for going wireless over your lobes.

Here are 4 more headsets, all Bluetooth that give you a chance to get rid of those pesky cords, well most of the cords anyway!

1st on the list is a set of headphones from Sony. The specific model # is DR-BT22. These on-ear headphones have a 30ft range, weigh under 3 oz, folds up can be used to take a phone call, and can control basic iPod functions from the headset. $96.

Kleer’s DigiFi Opera S5 wireless earbuds

Kleer now has a set of wireless earbuds specifically designed for iPods. The DigiFi Opera S5 set adds an iPod-compatible transmitter as well as some remote buttons on the earbuds.

Wireless earbuds are still a rare commodity although there are quite a few wireless headsets, both Bluetooth and other wireless transports. The Kleer set, as you can see from the photo, still has a sizable receiver directly attached to the earbuds, but at least they sit unobtrusively behind your neck.

The range is up to 32ft, so it shouldn’t be an issue if you have your MP3 player in your pocket while jogging. You can recharge the batteries via USB. The DigiFi Opera uses a 2.4GHz freq to transmit.

The S2 model (which is not specifically iPod-compatible) is a bit cheaper.

Moxi Mate – multi-room add-on for Moxi DVR

Digeo (now owned by Arris) recently released a new addition to their product line, the Moxi Mate, which solves the multi-room problem, as in how do you get the content on your main Moxi DVR to a TV in another room.

The Moxi Mate has a large subset of the features of a regular Moxi DVR, such as HDMI, HD component output, USB 2.0 ports, a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port, a remote control and even an eSATA port. Of course, you also get the award-winning Moxi graphical interface and software.

Remember Moxi is not just a DVR, but also gives you access to Web-based content like Netflix, Hulu and YouTube; access to multimedia on your computer; and other up to date content from the Net like news, sports, weather and other info.

The Moxi Mate is a bit pricey for just an add-on, and Digeo should really sell a bundle of a DVR + Mate for a much reduced price. Other than that, the Mate is really what you need to complete your Moxi DVR.
