How to Convert Cassette Tapes to MP3s for Free on a Mac

My wife recently was deep cleaning and ran across a few tape cassettes that she remembered she really liked and asked if I could convert or digitize the tapes to MP3s for use in iTunes and on her iPhone. I figured it wasn’t a big deal so I told her I could before I thought through the process (that’s fairly typical for me). In any case, converting tapes to MP3s using a Mac ended up being simple enough. After the jump, you can read my step-by-step how-to on converting cassette tapes to MP3 on a Mac.

App Inventor for Android lets you build apps without programming

Here is where a little Google magic may make Apple’s iPhone/iPad division worry a bit, if not a lot. Google Labs is rolling out a new tool called App Inventor, which is an Android app development tool that does not require any coding.

Let me say that again – you can build applicaitons for your Android phone without knowing how to program. If you can drag and drop, you can ‘program’ apps!

App Inventor is invite-only right now, but you can watch the demo video here as well as see some of the other sample apps on the site.

NTP Going After Other Wireless E-Mail Software/Hardware Makers

As much as mankind’s (now) convoluted legal system keeps our complicated world (mostly) in check, sometimes it can just run amuck, particularly in the field of patent law.

Take the case of NTP, which claims to have a patent on “wireless e-mail”.  They have already extracted a sizable chunk of licensing monies (~$600M) out of R.I.M, maker of Blackberry smartphones. NTP is now going after the other big names in the smartphone business: Apple, Google, Microsoft, HTC, LG, and Motorola.

With any luck, these companies have altered their technology enough to avoid losing to NTP, because a win for them puts them in position to continue terrorizing the industry with lawsuits.

The Apps They Might Have Used – American Revolution Edition

By Jennifer Jacobson of Retrevo.com

These days it’s hard to imagine a current president or world leader who isn’t connected to the internet, who doesn’t get email, and who doesn’t have a cell phone. When Barack Obama went to the White House, a BlackBerry went with him. Senators, congressmen and leaders around the world are connected by their laptops, cell phones, and various other devices but it wasn’t always like this. Our founding fathers (and mothers) had to do things the hard way. If they wanted a message delivered, someone had to deliver it by hand. If they wanted to research something, they had to find a book or an actual person who knew more than they did. If they got lost, there was no GPS device to point them in the right direction.

AT&T Fail… again

AT&T Fail Ordering through the AT&T site is down, must be June and time to pre-order the new iPhone… You’d think AT&T would have learned their lesson by now.

AT&T has failed again under the demand for pre-orders of the iPhone 4. Gadget blogs throughout the blog-iverse are reporting that the connections to AT&T have been failing since this morning. Most people see the error included in the image above (taken during my attempts this morning), “Your session expired”, “Your request couldn’t be processed” or simply “Processing information.”

Gina on Apple’s Advertising and Aesthetics

FaceTime Gina Trapani from LifeHacker fame wrote a thesis on Apple’s Advertising and Aesthetics on her blog called Smarterware. While we don’t typically talk about other people’s blog entries or opinions, Gina’s article explains how Apple sells product and is well worth a read.

The article, “Lessons from Apple on Advertising and Aesthetics“, describes Apple product advertising with a word or two speaking about aesthetics of Apple products. Her article is worth a read.

I wanted to expand on Gina’s article by mentioning how Steve Jobs’ presentations are Apple’s largest advertisement through his modus operandi as he steps on stage at a forum like WWDC to describe the latest “insanely great” products and features. Regardless of whether you are a Apple fanboy or not, if you remove your prejudices you must agree that Steve Jobs can present and speak better than any technology leader. Why is that?

WWDC Keynote wrap-up

WDC '10 Steve Jobs took the stage in his typical fashion wearing Levi’s 501 jeans, a St. Croix black mock turtleneck and New Balance 991 shoes to a standing ovation then WWDC started with his typical phrase: “It’s great to be here!”

Then the Reality Distortion Field spun up as Job’s provided some updates concerning iPad sales starting with an email quote he received stating that the iPad was indeed magical:

“I was sitting in a cafe with my iPad, and it got a girl interested in me. Now that’s what I call a magical device!”

iPad sales have topped 2M units sold which is equivalent to an iPad sale every 3 seconds. Since this is the Developer Conference Job’s made sure to mention that there are now 8.5K iPad-specific apps with 35M downloads representing 17 apps per iPad. Wolfram Associates, the developer of The Elements, earned more on the first day than 5 years of google ads on periodictable.com.
