Sylvania DOT-It LED Lights

Sylvania DOT-It LED Lights

This is one of those super practical, yet inexpensive gadgets made possible by a relatively newer technology, as in you couldn’t get LED-based lights back in 1960! The Sylvania DOT-It LED Light sticks to practically any surface and shines its three bright white LEDs instantly when tapped on. Runs off of 3 AAA batteries. Good places to stick it – garages, attics, sheds, tight spots when you would normally use a flashlight. Sylvania DOT-It LED Lights are also available in black, red, purple, orange, and lime green.

Make the TiVo S3 Remote Work Around Plasma TVs

TiVo Series3 Remote Fix Reprinted Courtesy of DVR Playground

Lightrunner came up with a better alternative to the “onion paper” hood as it just wasn’t aesthetically pleasing.

I figured the IR sensor had to be right behind the face plate as with most A/V components, so I decided to take my S3 apart and see if I could shield it somehow without completely blocking it. Taking apart the S3 was very easy and the inside was very easy to work in.

AeroGarden

AeroGarden

I like this Gizmo of the Day for a couple of reasons.

The first reason is because it reminds me of a trip I took as a kid. I learned about hydroponics at Epcot Center’s Land Exhibit in Orlando. Hydroponics provides many advantages over traditional farming. For one, fewer pesticides are needed. Also, hydroponics requires less water than plants being grown in soil. Plants grown hydroponically can grow five times as fast as traditional methods. Crazy enough, growing plants actually held the attention of a young gizmateer!

Secondly, with the E. coli incident recently, I’m not too keen on eating greens. I know, the E. coli incident only deals with spinach but other leafy vegetables could easily be infected in the same way as the infected spinach was. With that in mind, I’d prefer to know where my leafy greens come from! Also, hydroponically grown plants are not contaminated with soil or soil borne diseases.

SkyCaddie GPS Rangefinder for Golfers

SkyCaddie GPS Rangefinder for Golfers

It has been a while since we last featured a golf-related gadget and since Father’s Day is around the corner, it seemed like a perfect time. Introducing the SkyCaddie – a portable GPS rangefinder. It ‘knows’ how far away from your target (the green, etc.) you are. There are thousands of golf courses out there that are already designated SkyCourses; their entire data is already available for downloading into your SkyCaddie. If the course you’re playing isn’t a SkyCourse, you can set up the data yourself. SkyCaddie isn’t cheap, and you would also need to pay to access the SkyCourses data on skygolf.com, but hey, what’s your golf game worth, eh? ๐Ÿ˜‰

JVC Launches New Everio 3-CCD Flagship Hard Disk Drive Camcorder

WAYNE, NJ, May 9, 2006 รขโ‚ฌโ€œ JVC Company of America today announced the launch of a hard drive camcorder that combines a 3-CCD imaging device for superior quality video with the long recording time made possible by an internal 30GB (gigabyte) hard disk drive.

The new JVC Everio G Series GZ-MG505, like all Everio G Series camcorders, eliminates the need to carry tapes, discs or any media at all, yet can record up to seven hours of DVD movie-quality video or more than 10 hours at DVD camcorder-quality. To put this storage capacity in context, it would take 22 single sided DVD camcorder discs (8 cm/20-minute discs) to hold just seven hours of video at camcorder quality. In Eco mode, over 37 hours worth of video can be shot without any need to eject or reload recording media.

Wicked Lasers

Wicked Lasers

The Geeks received one of the Nexus Wicked Lasers (green laser) from Wicked Lasers earlier this week. These are the same lasers that have been busting balloons and lighting matches just from the laser beam.

These are serious gizmos for the 18 and over crowd as these lasers are illegal if you point them up to an airplane in the US and you really can’t play around with looking at the laser. The Wicked Lasers are great for pointing out stars or for use as a laser pointer in a large auditorium, but not to be used as a toy. Check out our upcoming full review!

New Laser-based HDTVs on the way from Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi is coming out with a new species of high-def televsion that uses colored (red, green, and blue) lasers to produce the images rather than mercury lamps. Don’t hold your breath though, because they are not due to come out until late next year. But if/when they do, it will be yet another incremental revolution in television technology as the lasers use less power, result in lighter and thinner screens and boxes, and produce a wider range and intensity in colors. Compared to a similarly sized plasma set, one of these new boxes will be half the weight, and use one-third the power. Wow.
