Google Rolls Out 2-Step Verification Security for Accounts

Let me kick off this article with the executive summary: if you have a Google account and a phone, enable 2-step verification on your account right away.

Google recently rolled out much improved security for its user accounts in the way of 2-step verification. What this means is that your account would no longer be protected by only a password, but also something which you should physically have, in this case your phone (mobile or landline). …

Comcast XFINITY TV iPad App Released

Comcast XFINITY iPad TV app Comcast announced an upgrade to the XFINITY iPad app which was released on February 1st. This new (and free) upgrade allows Comcast consumers to watch their favorite On Demand shows and movies right on the Apple iPad. This is in addition to being able to use your iPad, iPhone and iPod touch as a remote control, to search On Demand and TV listings and to schedule your DVR even when you’re away from home.

If you have Comcast and use this app, we want to know what you think. This feels like a new killer app for the iPad similar to the Netflix iPad app.

CardMobili App cuts down on wallet clutter, saves Rewards Cards

Almost every store seems to have their own loyalty card systems today where you can sign up for a card that’s supposedly going to save you money (even if it is in the long run). The problem with these cards is that they only work for individual shops, meaning you need to carry a wedge of them around with you to be anywhere near effective.

That’s where the Cardmobili app comes in – it allows you to save all your reward cards onto your phone for use at the till.

It falls into the category of things that make you go “Why didn’t I think of that?”

Mac App Store favorite picks

After looking around Apple’s newly released Mac App Store last night, I found a few Mac Apps that peaked my interest. Happy hunting and let us know your favorite apps.

Lyrica Lyrica ($0.99) searches through six different databases automatically to locate the right lyrics of the currently playing song in iTunes. At less than a buck and an average rating over 4/5 with 28 ratings so far, you can’t go wrong with this Mac App if you’ve ever wondered what those lyrics were.

Apple Mac App Store account verification not working

Apple released the Mac App Store earlier today allowing Mac users with Mac OSX 10.6.6 to browse and purchased Mac Apps much like iOS devices use the iTunes App Store.

While playing around with the Mac App Store, I discovered a work-around to having to validate your account with a second factor. To login to the Mac App Store, you need to first use your iTunes or Apple ID and password. For additional account verification, users must then enter verification of the credit card on file.

This is where Apple’s account verification is broken and you can login for the first time without without having to complete the credit card information for verification.

Read on to view a walk-through showing how account verification is broken.

Apple Mac App Store now open

Mac OSX 10.6.6 - Apple Mac App Store Apple launched the Mac App Store today with the latest OSX release (10.6.6). The Mac App Store looks and feels the same as the familiar App Store for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Now Mac users can browse the Mac App Store to find new Mac apps by categories mimicking the App Store turning installation into a simple process of entering your iTunes password you use to buy apps or music and you download and install the new app instantly. The feature most people that use the service will enjoy is that you keep your apps up to date the same way you do for your iOS devices in that the Mac App Store will keep track of your apps and lets you know when the update is available.

Daniusoft DVD Ripper for Mac

Review: Daniusoft’s DVD Ripper for Mac

Daniusoft DVD Ripper for the Mac Daniusoft provided the Geeks with a license of the DVD Ripper for Mac title for review. The aptly named utility provides the ability to rip DVDs to many of the popular formats plus the software allows you to rip background music from DVDs.

There are two types of DVD ripping software. First, there is the simplistic ripper that provides the user with very few options and clicks needed to start the process of ripping a DVD. Secondly, there are expert rippers that provide users the ability to modify everything from the bit and frame rates for video to the bit and sample rates for audio of DVDs being ripped. Daniusoft has walked the line and provided the best of both worlds in that you can simply drag a DVD and click “Start” to begin the rip; however, Daniusoft has also provided the options with presets (including Apple TV 2, Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy) to tweak the video and audio during a rip.
