Apple, Motorola & Cingular Launch World’s First Mobile Phone with iTunes

In the latest step in convergence, iTunes has made it’s way to your mobile phone. Motorola, along with Apple and Cingular, have brought iTunes to your phone with the new Motorola ROKR for a retail price of $249.99 available earlier this week at Cingular retail stores.

With a color display to view album art and built-in dual-stereo speakers and the nifty feature of pausing what’s playing to take a call, the Motorola ROKR with iTunes pre-installed is sure to excite quite a few early adopters and regular consumers.

For me, the phone does not have a FM transceiver to easily play the tunes through my car speakers and that’s a bit of a turn-off. I’ll stick to my current convergence level with my Treo 600 and Mini iPod… for now!

You knew it was just a matter of time – an iPod mated with a cell phone. In this case, it’s a Motorola product. Apparently, the phone will work on the Cingular network. Of course, at this point, it’s still vaporware, but we’ll see. It’s certainly in Apple’s best interest to do this as other cell phones are gaining the ability to store and play music and let’s face it – most folks want consolidation of their portable electronics.

THE IPOD SHOWS WHY Apple Computer is a great company. With elegant hardware and friendly software, Apple’s portable player made a profitable business out of digital music — a trick that had eluded record labels and such erstwhile leaders as Sony, Microsoft, Real Networks, and Napster.

Some Apple bulls argue that the shares could go 50% higher, noting how Apple has held its turf against the “iPod killers” of Sony and the digital-music schemes of Microsoft (MSFT). Little noticed by these iPod zealots, however, is a looming threat from overhead with a footprint as large as the continent: Wireless phone companies are teaming up with the music industry to make most mobile phones into music players.
