Rē App turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a Universal Remote Control

Re Universal Remote iPhone app/accessoryThe NewKinetix Rē iPhone accessory together with the Rē App turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a Universal Remote Control. If you haven’t gotten a decent universal remote (like the Logitech Harmony), then consider outfitting your iPhone.

The accessory plugs into your iPhone’s connector and the Rē App (free download from the App Store) makes setup easy with its database of IR codes so you don’t need to manually program it based on your other remotes. The app allows for macros so you for example, program one-button for turning on the TV, cable box, and DVR all in one go.

Maintain favorite lists, channels and take your universal remote anywhere you go.

My 12 Favorite Apps for the iPad that Rock! – May 2010 Edition

iPad appsIn a couple of days I will have had my iPad for an entire month. In the past four weeks, my laptop and desktop machines have seen a considerable drop in use from me as the iPad has taken over several functions I had used them for.

The apps represented in my Top 12 Favorite iPad Apps are the ones that have helped the most with this transition plus a few other iPad apps that simply have caught my fancy.

I have a feeling this list will continue to change on a weekly basis with a few exceptions (the top 4 or 5 for example).

Let’s get started with the countdown with #12…

Invisible SHIELD protects your gadget all around, not just the screen

invisible shieldHave you ever stopped and counted how many gadgets you have? I bet it’s more than you think. Some of them are probably pretty pricey so I’m sure you’d like to protect them as much as possible.

Now protecting your touchscreen device without affecting its touch ability can be tricky or at least can diminish its sensitivity. And you may not like gadget protectors that add to the gadget’s weight and size.

This is where Zagg’s invisibleSHIELD comes in – it’s a tough but clear screen protector that goes around the entire device and keeps it free from scratches, blemishes, etc. It comes with a squeegee and solution to apply the Shield, and if you decide against it, you pull it back off without damaging your phone.

It also has the advantage of being able to protect the screen of your device without interfering with any touch sensitivity. It’s strikes a nice balance of protecting your device while not interfering with the look and feel of it.

Devices supported include iPods & iPhones, PDAs, Laptops, Cameras and more. Even if your device isn’t supported, you may be able to buy an Invisible Shield skin for another device that is very similar in dimensions, but it’s best to talk to the vendor first.

Pogue’s Review of the iPad

Sometimes it’s funny that the two of us are in the gadget blogging biz together. The iPad is a great example of that. Chief Gizmateer couldn’t wait to get his, and loves it. I on the other hand, didn’t really have any burning desire to own one. Not that I don’t think it’s a gorgeous looking gadget with a great deal of functionality.

Why is that? Well I think David Pogue’s recent review of the iPad included what I think is the main factor for me:

“And the techies are right about another thing: the iPad is not a laptop. It’s not nearly as good for creating stuff.”

And sure, there are going to be lots of people who are going to disagree with me, but I can think of two great examples where I’m better off with my ‘clunky’ laptop: lots and lots of typing and switching around my 2 dozen open applications.

By the way, just imagine – we’re so blasé about technology now that we’re starting to regard what is an incredible advancement in human history (a laptop computer) with disdain. Of course, you can guess that I’m still awed by technology on a regular basis, either in spite of or rather because I understand a fair amount about it.

Twas the night before the iPad

Twas the night before the iPad delivery, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, except a geek and his mouse.
The pre-signed form hung on the front door with care,
Just in case UPS came early and thought no one was there.

The geek updated his Mac OS X, iPhoto and iTunes,
Praying UPS would come early so he could play all afternoon.
Spending nights downloading iPad apps like crazy
And days looking for accessories, my head hurts and is a little hazy.

Have a happy iPad Day!

LG eXpo GW820 smartphone can turn into a projector

LG expo cellWe don’t feature a lot of cell phones on GfG because there are entirely too many models and there are other sites that are dedicated to just that. But of course we feature the ‘big name’ ones and the newsworthy and unique.

The LG eXpo GW820 definitely fits the newsworthy category, as it’s the first handset to feature (an optional) snap-on pico projector. Yes, a projector, like the expensive ones you have in the office to show off those mind-numbing PowerPoint presentations on how badly your company is doing.

The (did we mention optional) projector weighs only 1.8 ounces and is small enough to fit into the palm of your hand, and can project an image up to 40″ in size. Not bad. However, it does kill the phone’s battery pretty quickly, so you’ll probably end up using the conventional office projector for long presentations/demos.

The phone itself is a slider with a full QWERTY keyboard, a 3.2″ touchscreen, 3G connectivity on AT&T, a 5MP camera, 802.11b/g WiFi, microSD card slot and runs Windows Mobile.

iPad Pre-Order Perspective

There are two distinct camps when it comes to the iPad… those who have pre-ordered and are anxiously awaiting April 3rd by researching iPad accessories and those who call anyone that ordered an iPad a fanboy.  Let’s get some perspective on the iPad pre-order that started this past Friday.

There are estimates that over 150k units were pre-ordered online through the weekend.  Friday an estimated 25k were sold per hour but over the weekend only 1k unit were sold per hour totaling more that 150k units in 60 hours.  This was determined by tracking over 120 order numbers submitted by volunteers on a message board.  This number includes only those pre-ordered through Apple’s online store and the estimates do not include iPad reservations or any large-volume orders that have been placed directly with Apple’s sales force by businesses.

Daniel Tello (the analyst for the above study) estimates that Apple will hit the 1M unit sold mark the first week of sales.

These numbers sound impressive… but are they?

Considering the original iPhone took 74 days to sell 1M units and there are only 3M-4M tablets across all brands and makers selling globally every year, this Geek thinks Apple may have a hit on their hands.
