Gmail’s latest Lab feature: Multiple Inboxes

Gmail’s latest Lab feature, Multiple Inboxes, is a doozy. I had to try this the minute I saw it. The name is a tab bit misleading, but Multiple Inboxes (MI) lets you get a glimpse into your other Gmail folders, labels or saved searches by providing additional boxes on your main Gmail screen.

Here’s an example – you want to always see the latest 5 starred items in a separate list without having to click on the Starred link in the left pane. Easy, create a separate pane in MI that shows exactly that. The screenshot shows 3 additional panes to the right of the Inbox.

What’s funny about this is quickly discovering that my 19″ monitor just isn’t wide enough to show enough of the e-mail preview that I want. No worries, I just placed the preview directly under my Inbox. And yes, time to get new monitors!

Google GDrive – could be real, or not

The Interwebs can be a funny place. Take for example, the rumored Google GDrive which would essentially be your own hard drive in the sky, umm… cloud. You could store all of your data on Google’s servers and have it accessible anywhere as long as you had a browser (presumably).

So what’s funny about that? Nothing. Sounds amazing really. No, the funny part is that Google hasn’t announced it. It’s just a rumor. However, a blogger called Brian Ussery noticed a comment in some Google code that he downloaded that mentioned it.

Funnier still is that Wikipedia already has an entry for ye ole GDrive. Nice. The Internet – even ahead of itself.

Facebook tops 222 Million

Even though we already knew it, Facebook has officially surpassed Myspace with users according to comScore. Even though the two sites were fighting closely for the crown mid-2008, by December the clear winner emerged as Facebook grew to 222 million users, 100 million more than Myspace.

The graph above shows the Google Trend utilizing data from google over the past 21 months. 21 months ago Myspace received double the interest as Facebook… but now people are saying “Myspace who?” and “Will you friend me on Facebook?”

#CES09: Dish 922 HD DVR with SlingBox embedded

Excellent – this is what we want to see – more convergence of media devices. Following the purchase of Sling Media by EchoStar, the 2 have worked together to come up with a Dish Networks receiver that essentially embeds a Slingbox. They’re calling it a SlingLoaded player, but the bottom line is that you now get place-shifting built into your DVR and Satellite TV receiver. Nice.

The 922 is a sleek looking box with a 1 TB drive for up to 1000 hours of storage (in SD), can support 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480i, and 480p formats, and has a new touchpad remote control that has half as many buttons as a standard remote control, and that can function as a universal remote. Of course, it includes all of the SlingBox features and be controlled via the Web using SlingGuide.

#CES09: miRoamer and Blaupunkt team up to make Internet Car Radio

miRoamer is an online portal where you can access a diverse selection of Internet radio content. Blaupunkt makes cool audio devices particularly for automobiles. Put them together and you get a car radio/receiver with Internet Radio functionality.

All you need is a 3G connection (i.e. via your phone) and you tether the radio to your phone (via Bluetooth) to get Internet access. You can add your own stations if you don’t like the ones that it comes with by default.

They were only showing off some prototypes, as availability Stateside will be in the 2nd half of ’09 with tentative prices starting somewhere around 300 Euros. Ouch. Hopefully that changes by then.
