LG Super Multi Blue: The War Between Blu-ray and HD-DVD Continues

The guys from Techlore just got back from CES, and one of the cool things they saw was LG’s new “Super Multi Blue” drive. It reads HD-DVD’s and reads and writes Blu-Ray discs. No HD-DVD write action yet.

Either way, it’s slow (4x) and expensive ($1200), but it’s out … soon. The good news is that the connections are there – HDMI, component and composite for video, and optical, coaxial, and discrete 5.1 for audio. And the even better news… 50GB disc storage capacity for either format. That’s about 9 hrs of 1080i and 23 hrs of standard def. Rock on! Beats the daylights out of the 2 episodes of Battlestar Galactica that can fit now on current DVDs.

CES 2007: Televisions Galore

Like last year, flat-panel TVs featured prominently at CES, and in particular, huge TVs. What a sight to see. It really makes you drool. This year, LCDs hit 108″ in size. We should start a pool to guess what the largest size will be next year. Any takers?

First up was that monster 108″ Aquos screen by Sharp. Try to ignore the huge Samsung sign in the background; those are all Aquos TVs in the forefround.

CES 2007: Digeo Refreshes TV Guide Interface With New Moxi boxes

Best Buy Connected After seeing a demo of the upcoming Moxi application and boxes, I have to say that they only thing standing in their way of making a serious dent in the DVR (Tivo) and Media Center markets is their lack of support for Satellite TV services. If you have cable tv, you may have been unknowingly using Moxi already, as Digeo has licensed their product to a number of cable providers and set top box manufacturers. The news here is that later this year, Digeo will be selling these boxes straight to the consumer in retail outlets.

CES 2007: Dualing Press Conferences – EchoStar vs DirecTV

DISH vs DIRECTV You’ve probably already seen our article about DirecTV’s announcement of the Sat-Go. I attended back to back conferences by EchoStar and DirecTV and it seemed that DirecTV one-upped DISH on everything that Dish announced with the exception of the DVR.

For example, EchoStar announced a partnership with Nascar while DirecTV announced the Nascar HotPass where five various drivers have their own channel each week starting at Daytona in a month. Each channel will include 2 announcers and 25-30 cameras so fans can follow their favorite drivers.

CES 2007: DirecTV Shows Off Sat-Go – Ultimate TV Geek’s Gadget

Sat-Go DirecTV announced an innovative new product called Sat-Go (Satellite on the Go) that is the world’s first completely portable and self-contained satellite entertainment center. This looks like an ultimate gadget for TV geeks and looks like a hardened briefcase and can fit into the overhead bin of an airplane.

Rick Rosner, a DirecTV consumer that just so happens to be television producer (CHiPs and the New Hollywood Squares) worked with a scene shop at Jay Leno’s show and David Kuether to develop the DirecTV Sat-Go prototype. Less than a year later DirecTV is announcing the product.

Apple Leads Amazon Orders

Amazon released their numbers for the holiday season and Apple did quite well.

According to MacRumors, six of Apple’s iPod models placed in the top ten in the MP3 Player category while three MacBook models placed in the top ten in the Laptops category. Apple also placed three iMac models and one Mac Mini model in the desktop category. Granted Amazon update’s their top items hourly, but having watched these categories over the past month to make sure our predictions came true, the placement and items have not changed much. Also, Amazon does not really sell all manufacturers such as Dell , the leading PC maker, but top spot at Amazon proves the resurgence of Apple continues.

Apple made the top spot in each of the categories with the 30GB iPod (Black), MacBook and an iMac.

In addition to winning the Amazon battle, online shoppers overwhelmed the Apple iTunes store on Christmas and the day after with four times the number of visits to the store this Christmas over last Christmas.

By the way, Amazon had 4 million orders on December 11th eclipsing the previous record of 3.6 million on December 12th, 2006. This helps prove that Cyber Monday is nothing but a farce!
