Play MP3 Files on Your Home Stereo Without a Computer

Ready To Put Your CDs In Storage?
If you are like many music listeners, you have ripped all of your CDs into digital music files, which are probably sitting on your computer and/or a portable MP3 player. Wouldn’t it be convenient to play all of those files on your home stereo unit, effectively eliminating the need to use the original CDs? Sure, you could always connect your home computer directly to your stereo, but this can be difficult without either purchasing expensive adapters or physically moving your PC next to your stereo. Thankfully, there are many other alternatives.

Mvix MX-760HD HD Wireless Media Center Firmware Source code Distribution

Mvix MX-760HD MvixUSA has released the Mvix MX-760HD HD Wireless Media Center firmware source code for free distribution under the GNU General Public License (GPL). Lately, MvixUSA and Unicorn Network Total Solution have taken some heat from users wanting access to the source code citing GPL violations. An email was even sent to the GPL Violations project.

After speaking with MvixUSA last week about the GPL issues, MvixUSA alluded to the fact that a solution was forthcoming and that they had been working with their lawyers to determine their responsibilities as distributors of the product without having access to the source code which was created by Unicorn. In addition, MvixUSA mentioned the importance of satisfying their customers while living up to the end of a contractual agreement with Unicorn.

The Geeks are excited by the release of the firmware code and believe the Mvix MX-760HD just became a more versatile product.

Mvix MX-760HD Firmware WPA Fix Released

Mvix MX-760HD Mvix released a new firmware for their popular MX-760HD product yesterday. Mvix’s MX-760HD is a hi-def 802.11g multimedia center that plugs into your network and allows you to play all your digital content directly on your TV.

The firmware (v1.1.17) enables WPA, which stands for Wi-Fi Protected Access, a far superior protection mechanism than WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy).

The Geeks are testing out the MX-760HD and should post a review on Friday after we’ve worked with the newest firmware for a few days. Until our review comes out, check out CNET’s review which just came out.

Circuits Of The Basic TV and What They Do – Part 1

Here is the first in Techlore’s series of articles on the innards of the basic Television set. Even knowing the basics of how a TV works and what can go wrong can be very useful, even if you do not attempt to repair the set yourself. You should be able to deal with a service technician and understand what they are telling you. More importantly, you’re likely to better judge if you are being taken advantage of by a dishonest or incompetent repair center.

Tree Stump Stereo Speaker 125W

Tree Stump Stereo Speaker 125W

I’ve seen outdoor speakers before that look like stones or rocks and even outdoor speakers that are solar powered that you put on the patio. Here’s a unique twist on the outdoor speaker system, a speaker system that simulates a look of a tree stump.

Interesting, but not for me as I’d prefer stumps removed rather than added to my backyard. Personally a speaker system built into a flexible border that I could use outside would be ideal.

Pioneer AVH-P7800DVD In-Dash DVD Multimedia AV Auto Receiver

Pioneer AVH-P7800DVD In-Dash DVD Multimedia AV Auto Receiver

This Pioneer in-dash auto A/V system plays DivX video files from CDs or DVDs on its 480p 7″ WVGA screen. Yep, so you can burn your own movies and then play them back in your car. [If you’re driving, you can’t watch!] Naturally, it plays other formats as well, including MP3, WMA, AAC, and even JPEG. If you have an iPod, you can interface it with this receiver via an adpater and then have control of your iPod via the touchscreen. The AVH-P7800DVD is also Satellite Radio ready for either XM Radio or Sirius Satellite Radio; nice to see a vendor not take sides here.

One other very nice feature is its Bluetooth capabilities – you can tie your Bluetooth cell phone via an adapter to the AVH-P7800 and control it via the touchscreen. Integration means that you can listen to/talk on calls via the headunit (it has a microphone), audio is automatically muted during incoming/outgoing calls and you can store the phone book and access it by voice or the touch screen display.

Harmony 1000 Universal Remote w/ Color Touchscreen

Harmony 1000 Universal Remote w/ Color Touchscreen

If you’re a regular reader of our site, you’ll know we love the Harmony universal remotes from Logitech. This particular one does not disappoint. It’s a bit different from the others that have the standard form-factor of an A/V remote, can be held in one hand and with lots of buttons. It’s more like a game controller or a Nintendo DS, with a 3.5″ color touchscreen.

Kensington FX 300 Speakers To Go for MP3 Players

Kensington FX 300 Speakers To Go for MP3 Players

Kensington is expanding their “Speakers To Go” product line with the FX500, but today we’re featuring the FX 300’s which were the first in this line. Using NXT Technology (check out our technology review of NXT), the speakers are built directly into the case as well as the volume control.

This unit features a smart storage space for ear buds, keys, cash, credit cards and more, quickly and easily zips close to keep your MP3 player and other valuables safe inside. An improvement over the FX300, the FX500 will provide access to your iPod through a clear window. Overall the sound quality is not as good as other NXT speakers, but the purpose of this speaker system is not superior quality but lightweight and durable protection for your iPod with the added benefit of speakers built into the case.
