CES 2010: Parrot Demos AR.Drone, RC Flying WiFi

parrot ar.drone rc flyerIn eye-catching demos reminiscent of WowWee’s Dragonfly in 2007, Parrot is showing off its AR.Drone which is a 4-propeller remote controlled flying ‘thing’. The AR.Drone features 2 cameras that you can view in real-time via WiFi, and also includes its own brain in the way of a Linux-based computer.

The AR.Drone will also ship with an augmented reality game, so you fly it as a virtual joystick of sorts. Parrot plans to offer up an iPhone app, but better yet, the source code as well so that hackers can develop even more interesting things for it. This may lead to a bright future for the AR.Drone.

Availability is tentatively March 5, but no word on pricing yet.

PC Prankster USB Stick Mischeviously ‘Takes Over’ Your Friend’s Computer

Ha! I love this – it’s the perfect gadget for revenge, April Fool’s day, or just as a prank or giggles. Just plug this USB thumb stick into your friend/enemy’s machine when they’re not looking and it takes over randomly turning CAPS lock on and off, typing out random garbage, and moving the mouse.

You can set a time-delay on it, so it only starts working some amount of time after you plug it in. It’s only mischievous, but not malevolent, so it doesn’t activate the Enter key or open/close/save documents, etc.

Rubik’s Cube Alarm Clock

Rubik's Cube Clock

Retro is in – it’s time to dig out all those Etch-a-Sketchs and Diablos and get playing! More alarm clock gadgets. This one looks like a Rubik’s cube, and includes time, date, alarm and temperature. To keep the cube theme going, you rotate the top row to switch between the different functions. Not as easy as pushing a button, but hey, you wanted a Rubik’s cube alarm clock, right?

Rubik’s Cube 360 – puzzle

Professor Rubik is at it again. This time, he has invented the potentially maddening Rubik’s Cube 360. The goal of the 360 is to guide 6 different colored balls into their matching compartments.

Simple, right? Not so fast. There are 3 concentric, transparent spheres that the balls can travel along, you have to spin the 360 and guide the balls.

Hours, if not years, of fun (?!) for under $20.

Settlers of Catan Board Game

Settlers of Catan

All board games are not created equal. The Settlers of Catan proves that point in droves. Now onto its 4th edition, SoC has taken the world by storm since its creation over 10 years ago.

In Settlers of Catan, you collect resources from different terrains in order to build roads, settlements and cities in order to win the game, which lasts anything up to 90 minutes – a little (possibly a lot) less strenuous than Monopoly.

Beginners and advanced players are catered for alike with separate instructions depending on what sort of difficulty you want to play at. All the resources collected in the game can be traded, adding a whole new dimension to gameplay. Hang on, this is starting to sound like just about every MMOPRG available online – now you can see why we’re featuring it! Perhaps the only downside is that you need 3 or 4 players to play, but then again everyone will want to join in with a game like this!

Teckell Glass Foosball Table

Teckell Glass Foosball Table

Recently we’ve found ways to bring retro products in to the modern world and this glass Foosball table by Teckell is no exception; it takes all the ‘traditional’ aspects of gameplay, and mixes it with extreme styling more fitting for today’s world.

The table is made out of glass walls and pitch, and has little wooden pegs for the players, with a basic white net at each side. Unknown is how well this stands up to the abuse I’ve seen doled out to foosball tables. I’ve been party to warping a few rods and breaking a few of those little soccer players!
