Expand Capacity on a TiVo Series3 to 1TB

Reposted courtesy of lightrunner and DVR Playground.

T3 1TB Upgrade Lightrunner, a TiVo modder, was kind enough to send us his instruction cookbook on how to modify a TiVo Series3 to a 1TB RAID setup. Scrapping his warranty paperwork, lightrunner used an external RAID setup to increase the storage capacity of his S3 to over 130 hours of HD programming and over 1240 hours (or 52 days) of standard definition television!

Archos 604 WiFi Shipped to Stores

InformationWeek reports that the Archos 604 WiFi portable media player has begun shipping to retail stores and will probably be on sale within the next two weeks.

The Archos 604 WiFi should provide stiff competition for the iPods and Zunes providing for full file-sharing capabilities, a 4.5″ touch screen and large storage capacity in addition to the ability to surf the web and transfer digital pictures, movies and music over the network.

Using the DVR Station, the Archos 604 can even record up to 130 hours of TV programming in DVD quality.

TiVo Series3 DRM Glitch: No HBO For You!

According to this article at CNET, if you connect a TiVo Series3 to a JVC A/V receiver via HDMI you will uncover a DRM glitch presenting you with an error mentioning that viewing is not permitted!

While tests confirmed that the HDMI output on the Series3 passed all video and audio to various HDTVs installed. The problem occurs when using A/V switching equipment such as receivers with HDMI switching (and currently this glitch has only occured while trying to access content while switching through JVC receivers such as the older RX-D702 and RX-D411).

Considering the TiVo Series3 does not ship with TiVo To Go features (Who killed TiVo To Go), the only way to archive your recordings on a TiVo Series3 are to record the programs real-time to a VCR or DVD Recorder.

You can learn more about the wonders of TiVo's DRM here.

TiVo loses latest round in court with EchoStar

October 3rd, a federal appeals court granted EchoStar Communications’ request to stay a permanent injunction imposed by a lower court. The injunction had prevented EchoStar from continuing to make and sell a certain DVR in the U.S. pending the outcome of EchoStar’s appeal.

Rewind to January 2004, TiVo sued EchoStar over a TiVo patent known as Time Warp. Time Warp allows device to store and play back programs. April of this year, a jury decided that the TiVo Time Warp patent had been violated by EchoStar ruling in favor of TiVo. EchoStar immediately appealed at which point TiVo won an injunction against the satellite-TV operator from making, using and selling DVRs using the Time Warp technology. One last nugget… EchoStar and TiVo are still business partners and extended their agreement period a couple of years!

Slingbox PRO’s HD Performance Reviewed

One of the most anticipated new features on the Slingbox PRO is its HDTV capable input. Though they use a standard HDMI port on the back of the Slingbox, you can’t actually connect a HDMI device directly to it. This port is designed for use with Sling Media’s HD dongle accessory, which is packaged and sold separately at an MSRP of $49. This adapter allows you to connect component video cables from your device to the Slingbox, and includes a pass-thru so you can still connect the component cables to your HDTV. Though a production model adapter wasn’t available at the time of this writing, Sling Media was kind enough to send Sling Community me a prototype unit to test out the HD performance of the Slingbox PRO.

Review: New Slingbox Review Round-up

Review: New Slingbox Review Round-up

Slingcommunity released three separate reviews for the new Slingboxes including the Slingbox Tuner, Slingbox A/V and the Slingbox PRO.

The Slingbox Tuner is Sling Media’s newest little Slingbox for those consumers who have the “basic” needs… geeks with DVRs need not apply! The Tuner allows input from terrestrial antenna and basic cable only. The reviewer was confused as to why Sling Media would include a model that only accepts analog inputs which are supposed to be phased out by 2009, but for those with basic cable or antenna and high speed internet, the Tuner would be a good introduction to “slinging”.

Sling Media’s New Family of Slingboxes

New Slingbox As DVR Playground reported last week, Sling Media officially will release three new Slingboxes on September 28th. This release marks the first hardware upgrade of the Slingbox which won several innovation awards this past year.

Slingcommunity got a sneak preview of the new Slingbox line containing the Slingbox Tuner, A/V and Pro as expected. With each Slingbox uniquely tailored towards a specific type of user, the choice of which Slingbox is right for consumers could be confusing so Slingcommunity has released another article to help choose which Slingbox is right for you. For instance, if you use basic cable and an antenna, the Slingbox A/V would be your choice. On the other end, if you have multiple devices you would like to control or connect your HD sources through component input into your Sling, you need to consider the Slingbox Pro.
