Mobile Multi Stand 360 Smartphone Stand

Review: Mobile Multi-Stand 360 Smartphone Stand

Mobile Multi Stand 360 Smartphone StandUnlike the FoneStand which does not fold up, the next gadget, the Mobile Multi-Stand 360, is a portable smartphone stand that folds flat and slips into your pocket/bag, etc.

The MMS360 as it’s known for short, requires a little installation. You first need to take one of the 3 included self-adhesive foam dots and stick it to the back of your phone. These protrude perhaps 1/8″ and have a lip that allows it to slip inside the stand itself.

Review: Samsung indestructible microSDHC memory cards

Now that memory cards are no longer the tiny, pricey luxury enjoyed by the few, manufacturers are looking for new ways to differentiate themselves from the rest of the pack. Samsung thinks it has found a way – create SD-type cards that are supposedly waterproof, shock and shatterproof and magnetic proof.

I took an 8GB microSDHC card for a spin, and really only cared about one test in particular – whether or not it’s water proof. In case you’re wondering, I figured that the risk from magnetism-caused data loss was pretty low, and as for being able to survive being run over by a car, if I’m in a situation where I pull out my memory card and it gets run over by a car soon after, I’m doing something wrong and have more to worry about than the survival of my SD card.

Review: Brinno Electronic Peephole Viewer

brinno electronic peephole viewerHere’s a gadget that you may never have heard of, but would probably fall into the “why didn’t I think of that” category. It’s an electronic replacement for the age-old peephole standard in so many front doors of houses across the world. No more do you have to plant your eye right up to that ridiculously small piece of glass to figure out who’s knocking at your front door. Instead, you press a button and see a nice flat (not a tiny fish-eye view) 1.3 megapixel color video image on a 2.5” TFT LCD screen. Definitely a nice improvement, wouldn’t you say?

My Top Must-Have Tech Products that I Use Daily

Here’s my list of favorite, must-have, daily use Web and tech products (mainly software) inspired by Michael Arrington and his annual list over at Techcrunch. For some reason, this year, he hasn’t published a list (yet?). [Here’s his list from Jan 1, 2010.]

There are 19 products on this list most of which I feel are the best web services available today. And while I absolutely use many more times that number of online web services and other software on a regular basis, I took a cue from Mr. Arrington’s list, and this is the top must-have services and products that I couldn’t live without and that I use practically every day, and in most cases in both my personal and work life.

Fingertip USB Optical Mouse

Review: Fingertip USB Optical Mouse

Fingertip USB Optical MouseSo I got an interesting little gadget recently, what the vendor calls a fingertip USB mouse. Ok, so perhaps it’s not fingertip, but just finger. Take a look at the photo – that little black contraption has a piece of velcro wrapped around the user’s middle finger.

So how does it work? Actually, does it work? Yes it does. But it’s not for everyone. I found that I just didn’t have enough control with my finger to prevent the mouse from shaking constantly, or being able to keep my finger down enough to allow the laser to ‘catch’ and get mouse movement on my screen.

OBi100 VoIP Adapter

Review: OBi VoIP Telephone Adapter and Voice Service Bridge

OBi100 VoIP AdapterI’ve been trialing a new gadget last few weeks called an OBi. OBi is essentially a Internet VoIP bridge box similar to what you might get if you subscribed to Vonage. Why would you want to get an OBi? The number one reason is that you could then ditch your traditional phone (POTS) line, and make calls for a whole lot more inexpensively. But it’s much more capable than just having a handset than can make and receive calls. Read on for of what you can do with an OBi.

Book cover of Paul Allen's "Idea Man"

Book Review: Paul Allen’s Memoir: Idea Man

Book cover of Paul Allen's "Idea Man" One of the co-founders of Microsoft along with Bill Gates, Paul Allen is one of the richest men in the United States and the world, and he recently wrote an autobiography called Idea Man.

Over half the book is devoted to his early life and inevitably his time at Microsoft. The rest of the book is devoted to his life after Microsoft particularly his varied Investments and and contributions to arts and music and sports.

While other headlines blared that the book slammed Bill Gates, I don’t see it that way. From everything I’ve read about Gates’ personality, Allen was just recounting the same almost matter-of-factly. If anything, he was almost complimentary and in admiration of Gates’ living-on-the-edge personality, although he probably reacted in consternation more so than anything else.

Review: EgoBook – a Glossy Hardcopy Version of Your Facebook Profile

EgoBook sampleAddicted to Facebook? Can’t get enough? Perhaps wondering what happens to all of those interactions and photos and comments if one day Facebook goes away? Or would just like a more ‘permanent’ version of it all?

You’re in luck. A 3rd-party developer has created a Facebook app called EgoBook that creates a real hard-copy book based on your Facebook profile. I created my very own EgoBook (courtesy of the developer) to see how it turned out.

Angry Birds Stuffed Toy with Sounds

Review: Angry Birds Squeezable Soft Toy With Sounds

Angry Birds Stuffed Toy with SoundsWhen I got the invitation to try out the Angry Birds soft toy with authentic sounds, I just had to say yes. This soft toy about 4″ across fits comfortably in an adult hand, and my 1-year-old loved holding it with both of hers.

Although she doesn’t know what the Angry Birds app/video game is, she loved hearing the sounds coming out of it when you squeeze it in the right spot (hit this page to hear the sounds). Unfortunately for her, she couldn’t quite duplicate it! Maybe later on.
