Activision Kills Off RedOctane Division, and with it Guitar Hero

Guitar Hero logoWow, just wow. I’m speechless at the news that Activision has announced they’re shutting down their RedOctane division which makes made the fantastically popular Guitar Hero game.

They made this decision primarily due to it having become a money-losing proposition. It was only a few years ago that the Guitar Hero franchise had hit $1 billion in sales!

Farewell Guitar Hero – you were revolutionary. Let’s hope Rock Band sticks around for a while yet.

Google Rolls Out 2-Step Verification Security for Accounts

Let me kick off this article with the executive summary: if you have a Google account and a phone, enable 2-step verification on your account right away.

Google recently rolled out much improved security for its user accounts in the way of 2-step verification. What this means is that your account would no longer be protected by only a password, but also something which you should physically have, in this case your phone (mobile or landline). …

HP Announces New webOS Smartphones, TouchPad tablet, and Synergy syncing

HP webOS logoHP held a large press event this week to announce and show off their new webOS-based devices, in particular their brand new iPad competitor which is due .

First remember that HP bought troubled Palm and with it, their relatively new webOS mobile operating system. Now HP has unveiled not only 2 new smartphone products, but a brand new tablet as well to compete with the iPad, the (probably intentionally named) TouchPad. They also described and demoed their cloud-based syncing system called Synergy.

Cloud City - China building a city for cloud computing

China building Cloud City

Cloud City - China building a city for cloud computing China is building a cloud computing and office complex that includes a mega data center primarily for cloud computing with the partnership of IBM. The complex will cover over 6M square feet with the initial data center space accounting for almost 650k square feet. That seems impressive but I thought they meant “Cloud City” not “Cloud Computing City” so I was less than impressed when I found out the complex wasn’t going to float in the clouds.

1. Hanvons – 5 inch display

Hanvon-WISEreader

Hanvon has been hammering the penny-pincher market for over a year now. It must have been fruitful, because now they’re rolling out four new low-cost models with screens ranging from 5 inches to 9.7″. The new models will even include touchscreens, allowing note-making via the included stylus. And, as always, expect to see Wifi/3G connectivity included and a price point that’ll make you blush.

Google Rolls Out Web version of Android Marketplace; Uses Poor Domain Name

Finally, Google has rolled out a Web-based store to browse the Android app marketplace.  Not that mobile phone users didn’t have access to the app store before, but it was only from their smartphones.

You can visit the new marketplace on the Web at Market.Android.com.  Unfortunately, Google stumbled a bit here, because while the domain name is Market.Android.com, the title and branding is set to “Android Market”. However, if you visit AndroidMarket.com, you will end up at Robotic Magazine’s website.

I think Google needs to open up the checkbook and buy this domain out, so users get to where they really want to go.

Two Yanks Decide to Help Their Canadian Neighbors by Shipping Them Downloaded Files

Canada has a some new metered Internet usage laws where any ISP using Bell Canada’s network has to cap their users at 25GB/month of downloads, after which they get charged $0.95 per additional Gigabyte. But here’s where it gets interesting – 2 Americans who run a security camera company are helping (and protesting the new law) by downloading anything for their Canadian friends, burning it to CD/DVD and shipping it via snail mail.

Oh, and did we mention they’re doing it for free? Yup, assuming the requests don’t take them under, it’s free. So if you’re Canadian and are using their service, creatively called Canadian Download, it would be nice to donate and/or patronize their main site. And of course, if you disagree with the law, register your complaint with the government.

Flexible Displays Take Another Step Forward

We’ve talked about flexible, bendable screens in the past – for example, Sony’s flexible OTFT OLED display. Here is more proof that flexible displays are indeed closer to reality.

Taiwan-based Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has come up with a production technique that would allow for cost-effective, mass-production of these types of displays, including both LCD and OLED screens. The technique called FlexUPD involves placing a layer of material between the flexible substrate and the glass, which would allow for easier removal (peeling) of the display from the glass.
