Google working on Automated Cars

Google's Robot CarOne of Google’s ‘secret’ projects that is just coming to light is their work on automated cars that drive themselves.

To date, their automated cars have driven over 140,000 miles. Of course, they’ve always been manned, but for the most part, the cars did the driving using a combination of video cameras, radar, laser range finders and detailed map data that they accessed from Google data centers. Impressive.

Windows PhoneMicrosoft has launched its latest mobile OS incarnation, dubbed Windows Phone 7, with a flourish – a slew of new phones by different vendors on multiple carriers.

Europe and Asia get these handsets first on Oct 21, while the US will follow in Nov. There will be 9 new handsets from HTC, Dell, Samsung and LG that will end up on carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, Vodafone and TELUS. Eventually, handsets will also make it to Sprint and Verizon in 2011 and over 60 carriers in 30 countries.

New Reports say iPhone heading to Verizon

iPhone on VerizonDo you remember that nursery rhyme “Polly put the kettle on, Sukey took it off again”? The Verizon/iPhone saga reminds me of that. Well it’s back on again. This time there are multiple sources saying the iPhone is coming to Verizon in early 2011.

If you’re an AT&T iPhone user who is planning to jump over, keep at least 2 things in mind:

  • You won’t be able to use data and speak on the phone (voice) simultaneously. At least, not yet. The CDMA standard that both Verizon and Sprint use does not have that capability yet, although it’s being worked on. Of course, the carriers will need time to implement it.
  • The 1st round of Verizon iPhones will in all likelihood be 3G only and not be ready for the faster 4G network that Verizon is rolling out next year.

Tablet market heating up as dozens of companies to release products this year

Although tablets existed before Apple introduced the iPad, they’ve certainly gone a long way to turning it into a full-fledged niche of its own and no longer simply a minor laptop variation. Of course, no electronics company wants to ‘miss out’ on the possibility to rake in some dough on the back of this hot new trend and to that end, dozens — yes dozens — of companies are releasing products this year.

UK’s Royal Mail puts out an ‘intelligent’ stamp

I think the word ‘intelligent’ is pushing it, but Britain’s Royal Mail service in conjunction with the Junaio app (iPhone or Android) has put out some stamps that can be used to trigger additional augmented reality-type info, this case in the form of videos.

Take your phone, open up the app and capture a photo of the stamp to launch the video (or other content). Here’s a video of it in action (skip ahead to 0:48 to skip the intro stuff). …

Blackberry puts out a tablet, the PlayBook, to compete with Apple

RIM Blackberry PlayBook

It may seem a little strange that the maker of Blackberrys (Research in Motion or RIM) is releasing a tablet, but that’s the strange world that Apple has generated. And so today, RIM announced their Blackberry PlayBook, a 7” LCD, 1024 x 600 touch screen tablet with full multi-touch and gesture support.

Visa’s Rightcliq is a Visual Bookmarking Tool for Online Shoppers

Visa RightcliqCredit card and payments processor, Visa, has jumped into the online shopping industry at an indirect angle by creating an online visual bookmarking tool called Rightcliq.

The site works in conjunction with a plugin that works in either Firefox or IE which lets you snag an image and link to any item you run across while shopping online. You can then head back to the Rightcliq site any time to see your wishlist of items.

You can also bundle items into groups. For example, you may be shopping for a new computer and have your eye on a number of them, but also shopping for a birthday present for a friend.

Finally, you can enter your credit card and shipping info for quick entry when shopping.
