CES 2008: Palm Talks about their next generation Linux-based OS

We spoke with Palm and they’re hoping to have their Linux-based OS out by the end of 2008. That’s still a long way away, and the exact plan for it is still up in the air. We asked about how much compatibility they plan to build into it so that the thousands of PalmOS apps out there can still be useful and while they don’t have a firm plan in place, they recognize the value in those applications and in not having to recreate the wheel.

We also asked what they planned to do to engage the Linux developer community, and again, no definitive plan but a desire to get them involved. Obviously the more they get that community involved, the more that their Linux OS can take off. We were definitely encouraged by what we heard.

CES 2008: Belkin’s FlyWire Wirelessly Transmits HDTV

Belkin FlyWireThe Geeks didn’t even realize that Belkin was in the A/V market, but their FlyWire will sure to please plenty of people that mounted their flatscreen to the wall only to realize that they still had to run a cable up the wall from their HDMI components.

The FlyWire is a solution that allows you to play your HDTV anywhere in the house without using wires to connect to your devices eliminating the “cable up the wall” syndrome or costly custom installation.

Wireless? That won’t support true HD at 1080p right? Wrong! Using the 5GHz band frequency, the device offers 1080p True Cinema HD resolution.

The Geeks love the concept but we have a reservation about the $499 to $599 price. As a DIYer, I can definitely do a clean job of running my HDMI through the wall for a clean install. The product would be perfect for those not comfortable with that process as a custom installation would be more expensive.

CES 2008: Belkin wants You to be a RockStar

Belkin’s RockStarBelkin had a few new gadgets out this year including one I had no idea that a market existed for. Apparently Gen-Zers love to share music on their iPods with each other. The problem Belkin solved is how to easily share the music with a playing iPod. Belkin’s octopus-looking gadget called the RockStar has five ports where headphones can be attached and music shared. There is also one hard-wired connection for your MP3 player and an included cable allowing you to add an additional MP3 player allowing teens to mix and control fade-ins using two MP3 players!

Availability is March 2008 in the US followed by April 2008 in Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia. The RockStar will go for $19.99.

CES 2008: Digital Media Convergence and Photo Geotagging Gizmos

NBC Universal, which has a huge presence at this year’s CES, was kind enough to offer us a slot at their live blogging station in Central Hall. As Jonathan Accarino of NBCU put it, their goal here in a nutshell is “consumer, content, connection.” They are also giving away free content, such as TV shows and movies as a way to promote their activities.

We spent the morning in South Hall and found a few noteworthy CE items that have either been announced for release later this year or are already available.

CES 2008: The Geeks visit Digital Experience

The Geeks spent a solid 3 hours @ Digital Experience Sunday night checking out dozens of companies and their products. Digital Experience is actually run by a different organization (Pepcom) than the one (CEA) that runs CES, but they cleverly run it the night before CES opens up and select a few dozen companies to come and show off their wares in a manageably sized ballroom. In this way, the press and analysts can get a headstart on some of the cool products taking a bow at CES. We’ll be posting up our take on some of the interesting products that we saw soon. Stay tuned, and remember you can find our RSS feed here.

CES 2008: GSM/WiFi Phone Running Google’s Phone OS called Android

GSM/WiFi Phone Running Google’s Phone OS called AndroidWistron NeWeb Corp, a Taiwanese company, was selected as a CES Innovations 2008 Award Honoree for their Wireless Handset technology. Offering a full set of applications for creating and editing documents, email (via pull protocols only), PIM, PC sync and web browsing over GSM as well as WiFi and Bluetooth.

Using Google’s Android and offering built-in 128 MB high capacity memory and a memory card slot supporting up to 2GB for greater storage space, the device has a standard Qwerty Keyboard and features a large 2.5” QVGA (240 x 320 pixels) TFT-LCD Display with 262K Colors Touch Screen. The device has software that allows you to take still photos and MPEG4, H.263, and WMA video record and play with the built-in 2M pixels (1600 x 1200) Camera and plays MP3s for music support as well as having voice recording and playback capability.

Wistron NeWeb Corp GSM/WiFi Phone with Google MapsThe phone won’t be available anytime soon in the US (they couldn’t give us an estimate). From the demo unit the Geeks played with, we thought the unit was nice but that there could be a little additional work. For instance, even though the device had a touch screen, the Google map application would not allow you to scroll the map. Also, the device seemed a bit unresponsive and slow when pushing the various buttons.

CES 2008: Digeo shows off upcoming Moxi products

We also spoke w/ Digeo at CES Unveiled who were showing off some new Moxi products that may hit shelves this year. They were guarded about timeframes and pricing. Digeo is well known for their Moxi DVR and program guide products that have been traditionally integrated into cable TV set-top boxes, but now they are trying to make the leap into their own products. Read on for more info and photos.

First up is the Moxi Home Cinema HD DMR product which is a High Def media recorder/DVR that is cable ready. Here are the additional bells and whistles that it integrates: DVD/CD slot for DVD, CD and MP3 playback; external hard drive (eSATA) support that supports up to 1TB of external storage; DVD up-scaling to 720p; integrated D2 audio 5.1 digital amplifier with speaker connections; view your Flickr albums; play games; on-demand Web video content; stream music and photos from your PC; HDMI connector; GB Ethernet.

Similar in class is the Moxi Multi-Room HD DMR which has all of the features of the Home Cinema as well as cableCARD support so you can ditch your cable TV companies set-top box. Its other major feature as evidenced by its name is the ability to get to and control all of the content on the main box by hooking up the Moxi Mate box to a TV in a 2nd room.
