Sony Walkman turns 30

In a day of MP3 players that hold thousands of songs, some of which are so small you can swallow, the Walkman seems blocky and ancient. Yet, the Sony Walkman (and all of its various imitators) had such an impact on our music listening habits that the brand name still survives to this day, 30 years after it first appeared.

For an amusing, and still insightful, piece on how far technology has taken us, you read Scott Campbell’s (13 years old) review of a Sony Walkman.

Happy birthday Walkman!

FUEL BlackBerry and iPhone Cases – Recharge Your Phone

iPhone FUEL Case

Looking back at some of the portable charging devices we’ve featured over the years, there really hasn’t been one as useful, and perhaps as elegant (that might be subjective), as this. Whilst providing your BlackBerry Bold 9000 or iPhone 3G with a rubber protective case and belt clip, it also has a built in battery to keep your phone going for up to an extra 20 days (BlackBerry) or 250 hours (iPhone) via its built in rechargeable battery which can be activated with the touch of a button.

Many people have to swap batteries constantly to keep their phones going but this does take you offline for a few moments which can be a pain – it’s either that or buying an unsightly solar charger like above!. The FUEL keeps you going without any delay in services and can even be charged simultaneously with your phone by simply plugging it into the wall socket. On the iPhone, docking doesn’t have to mean ditching the case either – it can all be done through it.

Time for the icing on the cake – every purchase comes with a free $5 Starbucks giftcard.

Fujitsu Develop Data-Erase USB Memory Sticks

Fujitsu Data-Erase Memory Device

Fujitsu have just announced their latest memory security device; one that erases the data after a certain time period and also has the ability to block users from copying the files from the memory stick to a PC. Perfect if you’ve had your memory stick with confidential files on lost or stolen (something that that would probably be welcomed in the UK).

#CES09: Tonium rolling out Pacemaker 60GB Portable DJ System

While this is probably not for the masses, it is for the DJ on the go. The Pacemaker DJ system from Tonium is a portable DJ mixer and player that works in effects such as pitch changes, looping, roll, echo and more things that the DJ-newb such as myself know nothing of!

We saw a 60GB Pacemaker that is truly handheld. It has jacks for headphone monitors as well as a crossfader, multiple channels and a USB connection. The cool part of the interface is the touchpad that lets you control many of the functions with your fingertips.

Powerstick V2 Portable USB Charger by Ecosol

Buy Now!
Here’s a product we first featured back at 2007’s CES show. Since then Ecosol has updated their Powerstick product which is a portable USB charger.

It’s an energy cell that is a bit larger than a USB stick, that can be used to power your portable devices. For example, it can fully charge a typical Blackberry. To charge something, just plug it into the device’s regular power adpater interface via an adapter. The Powerstick itself can be recharged simply by plugging it into a computer’s USB port. It can be recharged up to 500 times.

Version 2 of the Powerstick gets to you to 90% of full charge in less than 90 minutes.

Iomega Media Xporter Drive – USB Drive compatible with Xbox and PlayStation

Iomega is still around (was recently acquired by EMC) and are producing new products such as the Media Xporter Drive. It is essentially a USB 2.0 portable hard drive that is compatible not only with Windows and Mac PCs, but also with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles.

This is geared for those homes with those consoles but no media center, media streamer or PC attached to their AV centers. The Media Xporter Drive comes with software that can help you convert your multimedia content for perfect display on your game console. It supports formats such as QuickTime, AVI, VOB, JPG, MP3 and more.

Of course, the Media Xporter Drive is at heart still a hard drive, so feel free to use it just like that too!
