VTech 5.8GHz Executive Cordless Phone System

VTech 5.8GHz Executive Cordless Phone System

This is cool if you still use phones and not your cell for home coverage. This VTech phone operates over 5.8GHz which is a wi-fi friendly range and should provide a better talking distance and clarity when on the phone. Sure, there are a bunch of phones that support 5.8GHz, but do they have pretty little high resolution screens allowing you to feature 29 images and animations to be used as wallpaper or picture callerID? You can also expand the system with up to seven additional handsets.

September Contest

The Geeks have been a little frazzled lately and have not announced the winner of the August monthly contest… you’ll have to read on to see who it was.

We are happy to announce that MvixUSA has teamed up with the Geeks once again to sponsor the monthly contest for September. This month’s winner will win one of their Vije 1.3 MP webcams. This webcam was actually featured as a Gizmo of the Day in June.

In case you forgot how to win these monthly contests: You can earn credits simply by logging in then reading articles and posting comments. You can earn lots of credits for submitting an article. The rules in a nutshell are that every month, you will receive 1 Geek Ticket for every 100 Geek Credits you have and be automatically entered into the monthly drawing for a prize. It doesn’t get any easier than that! Go ahead and leave a comment and you’re on your way to prizes and geek glory!

Scrolling License Plate Frame

Scrolling License Plate Frame

This innovative license plate frame features a built-in scrolling display that lets you express yourself to fellow motorists on the road. While the manufacturer’s site mentions you can display greetings, business/website information, sport scores, etc… I believe I would display some of the rules from the Road Etiquette site with perhaps a sprinkling of profanity.

Using the wireless remote control, you can flip through up to five messages. With the ability to create five custom messages and 120 characters each… I feel I just might be able to express myself.

The Training Wheels Are Off!

The Geeks have decided to take the training wheels off our site!

Since July 2004, the Geeks have been through several web hosting providers and solutions. We started with a shared web hosting solution and discovered that if Fark or Slashdot picked up one of our articles… the site would crawl to a stop. We then decided to up the service to a VPS (Virtual Private Server) where we had a some more dedicated resources over the shared solution.

Thanks to you, our readers, we now need the resources of a dedicated server. Rather than start at the low end, we opted for dual Opterons, Raptor hard drives and an increase of memory from 128MB to 1GB (grunt! grunt!).

Let us know how we’re doing and if you notice a speed increase with the site by leaving a comment!

Thanks!
– the Geeks

Satellite UFO Radio-Controlled Flying Saucer

Satellite UFO Radio-Controlled Flying Saucer

This is our second remote control flying saucer we’ve featured as a Gizmo of the Day, but this one requires only two Jackson’s ($40). This wireless (49Mhz) radio-controlled Satellite UFO flies as high as 30 feet by pulling the trigger on the “ray gun” remote. The obligatory LEDs light up as this RC UFO flies. Even if you create your own Area 51, the impact-resistant foam protects the UFO from crash landings.

If you can’t shell out the $190 for the other RC UFO or want a starter RC UFO… you can’t go wrong with this $40 version!

mServer Residential Edition

mServer Residential Edition

Using the mServer, you can connect your lighting, security, HVAC, and A/V systems and control any device remotely from one location. The home-control system offers local and remote access and control of all home systems through a TV, monitor or touchscreen. The Internet-enabled controller can be accessed and modified from anywhere in the world.

Based on the mControl software which is Windows-based, the mControl service manages and controls zones and devices, manages and executes automation macros, and provides a remote user interface using a built-in web server.

Wake & Shake Alarm Clock

Wake & Shake Alarm Clock

Using an alarm clock to wake up can be more difficult than it sounds for many people. Those with hearing difficulties may not be able to hear a standard alarm clock, and early risers may not want to wake their spouses. The Wake & Shake Alarm Clock is a smart alternative that lets you select one of four different alarm options that can help you to rise without bothering the person next to you. Choose from combinations of adjustable sound, flashing lights, and a vibrating pad that shakes you awake at the time you set your alarm to go off. You can even connect this system to your phone to be shaken awake for an early morning call (this feature requires a dual phone jack adapter, which is sold separately).

Digital File Transfer System

Digital File Transfer System

Forget having to bring your laptop along on trips to move photos, video or music from geek gizmos to a storage device. You can transfer files from one data storage device to another without going near a computer using Hitch the Digital File Transfer System. This speedy data transfer system connects any USB devices (devices and USB connector cords sold separately), such as digital cameras, USB flash drives, iPods, virtually any device with a USB connection, and it will even charge both devices as it transfers files.

Of course, I can’t live without my laptop, but this would be fun to play with.

Review: GP2X: A Linux-based Gaming and Multimedia Handheld

Review: GP2X: A Linux-based Gaming and Multimedia Handheld

I raised the question earlier this year as to whether or not consumers have finally got fed up with proprietary systems such as the Sony PSP (Playstation Portable) and do they want the freedom of an open- source handheld system like the GP2X? Some geek bloggers (1, 2) and forums (1 , 2) have gone as far as dubbing the GP2X a “PSP killer”. Yes, I may have even referred to the GP2X in the same sentence as “PSP killer”, but in reality, I believe Sony is the PSP’s worst enemy. In any case, the Geeks have been playing with a GP2X from GamePark Holdings over the past couple of months. Read on for a comprehensive GP2X review as well as comparisons to Sony’s PSP.
