The ‘anti-Twitter’: Woofer!

LOL. Too funny. 2 guys from DC decided to create the “anti-Twitter” appropriately titled Woofer. What does that mean exactly? Woofer doesn’t have a maximum length like Twitter; instead it has a minimum length (1400 characters to be exact)!

It’s actually an homage to Twitter. Not sure this will actually have Twitter-like traction, especially as 1400 characters is really getting up into blog entry length.

The bit I find most interesting is that you can tweet your woofs!  Too bad they didn’t get the domain woofer.com.

PS> I can’t woof this post; it’s not long enough!

Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) available Fri

Apple’s latest revision of the Mac OS operating system, version 10.6 (codenamed “Snow Leopard”) drops tomorrow (Fri) for an upgrade price of $29. Yes, $29. Why? Because Snow Leopard is meant to be more of a performance and efficiency improvement, not a version replete with new features.

Not only is the memory footprint smaller, but the disk space taken up by the core OS is smaller (by ~7GBs). However, this version drops support for the PowerPC architecture and now only supports the Intel CPUs that power today’s line of Macs.

The improvements and bug fixes, not to mention the price, so far have been hailed positively.

Google Maps – now with Arterial Traffic info

For those of us commuters, especially the ones living in the suburbs of some big city, traffic can be a real nightmare. And of course, we’re all looking for alternative routes and usually when you drop off the freeway, you’re taking a gamble that the side streets will be better traffic-wise.

Help is here – Google (Traffic) Maps now features arterial traffic!

And while we’re at it, *you* can help to get this speed info right by getting Mobile Google Maps on your GPS-capable phone and turning on My Location so your phone sends Google up to date info about how fast you’re going. Nice.

New Sony e-Book reader coming in Dec

Sony steps up the the e-Book reader wars as they announce a new addition to their line-up. The Reader Daily Edition (yes, cumbersome name) has an integrated 3G wireless conn (with free AT&T service to the Sony bookstore), a 7″ touch screen that operates in both landscape and portrait modes and has 16 shades of gray.

What’s also notable about this announcement is that you can now virtually borrow books from your library (assuming they offer electronic lending).

Hopefully available in time for Christmas, it will retail for $399. Watch out Amazon & Kindle. Sony is nipping at your heels. We’re still hoping for more embracing of common standards though.

Yahoo! Mail still #1, but for how much longer?

Image via CrunchBase

ComScore shows Yahoo Mail is still the world’s leader in e-mail services, but the bad news (for Yahoo) is that Google’s Gmail is the fastest growing service. Hotmail is still #2, and AOL just slipped to #4 after Gmail who leapfrogged them to go to #3.

Four years ago when we sized up Hotmail vs Yahoo vs Gmail, Gmail was the clear winner and has only become progressively better. Witness all of the improvements and feature additions that they’ve [Google] have put into Gmail.

For example, this week Google showed off another killer feature – the ability to import your e-mail from other accounts into Gmail.
