Xbox Down, Wii Up

In an attempt to bolster poor sales on the Xbox 360 DVD player add-on, Microsoft has cut the price from $199 to $179 and will include 5 free movies if you’re a buyer in Aug or Sept. On the flip side is the Nintendo Wii which has helped to quadruple, yes 4 times, Nintendo’s profits for the most recent quarter (ending June). No, the Wii doesn’t have an HD DVD player, but that’s not why folks are buying it. They want to play games.

In related good news for Sony, their profit for the last quarter (ending June) doubled over the same quarter last year. Unfortunately, their game division is still in the red. Consider this: Sony sold 710,000 PS3s in that quarter while Nintendo sold 3.5 million!
