iPhone 3G and WWDC Announcement Predictions

There’s no doubt that an iPhone update is imminent. But while nearly everyone has agreed on that, nobody knows anything definite about the specifics… except that the new iPhone will be compatible with the Microsoft Exchange email services. There’s a link on the main Apple.com iPhone page where you can apply to be a beta tester.

In regards to the iPhone, here’s what we know today:

  • Apple.com lists the iPhone as “Currently Unavailable.” Stock is so low that you can’t buy it. Usually a good sign that a new model is coming out soon.
  • Apple continues to make iPhone sales deals across the globe. Netherlands, Hong Kong, Singapore, India and Australia were all announced with the last few months.
  • A 3G settings screen was found by hackers in the latest firmware update for the iPhone.
  • The new iPhone will most likely be unveiled during Steve Jobs’ keynote speech at Apple’s WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) on June 9th.
  • AT&T is prohibiting retail-store employees from taking vacations between June 15 and July 12, claiming that they’re expecting a “heavy selling period”. They implemented a similar policy last year for the iPhone launch.
  • AT&T executives have said numerous times that all of their smartphones (the iPhone is one of the) will support 3G networking soon.
  • The Apple Stores have been out of stock of the iPhone for weeks. And people are forming daily lines outside Apple stores that still have a few iPhones in stock. …

Android – Live! Images and Video Demos

Android, the Google supported platform/OS for mobile devices, is starting to see the public light of day. The Android team has put together a bunch of live demos of the phone in action.

Having seen just a few of the many videos and images, I’m already looking forward to when I can have an Android-powered phone in my hands. You just need to take a look at this very quick video to see what I’m talking about.

Need more? You can see the whole lot of them over at the androidcommunity.com website.

White iPhone 3G ?

This may be quite a leak if it turns out to be true, but take a close look at this photo. Do you see the Apple logo? Recognize the approximate size? Yep, it’s an iPhone, but this time in white and very curvy.
A couple of Dutch Apple fan sites released this pic and more this week. I’m waiting for Apple’s lawyers to hit the fan and get these taken down; anyone interested in forming a pool?

Earthscape shows off Google Earth-like application on iPhone

This is simply wicked cool. Although I’m not a huge fan of the iPhone, in terms of it being a cell phone, I’m immensely impressed by its touch screen interface. Here’s an example of that interface being put to amazing use by a company called Earthscape, who produces a virtual Earth app that is similar to Google Earth. Take a look at this video which shows how you can get the Earth to spin by moving the phone around.

Bluetooth Headset & Tablet PC Stylus

Stylus Bluetooth Headset

This small but powerful gadget has three different functions in one. It has the capability of being hands free, a hanging headset, and a stylus for your iphone. Perfect for the person who needs their hand free while working, but who often needs the stylus for the phone. This is the perfect item for people who want Bluetooth headsets but do not want an ear piece on all day long. You can connect to your shirt and have it with you all day long. You won’t have to carry extra pieces for your phone because you can get them all in one. This is a must have for anyone who has to make important calls or store information while on the go.

Getting value from technology

There are two things I am pretty pleased about this week – my new phone and a really useful plugin for Outlook, both of which are allowing me to get much more value out of the technology I use every day.

I have recently changed my mobile phone to a Nokia N95 8GB (from a SE K800i) and so far I am really pleased with its performance. The interface is responsive and the functionality including the wireless connectivity, 5 megapixel camera and N-gage are well worth the upgrade – you can read more about it Welcome to my Nokia N95 8GB.

Xobni (read Inbox backwards) is enabling me to get way more use out of Outlook (Why I need Xobni to manage my e-mail) than I have had before. Two of the key features for me are the contact relationships and the exchanged files indicators. The Contact Relationships part allows me to find a particular email recipient who have been involved a communication chain whilst the exchange file indicators keeps a log of files transmitted between us.

I have also posted the next part in the Web 2.0 series: 42 things about Web 2.0 in 2008, part 2 of 3.

Latest Blackberry rumor – iPhone lookalike

Rumor on the streets is that Blackberry is readying an iPhone lookalike with the focus being on having a full touchscreen, which would be a major departure from the traditional full QWERTY keyboarded Blackberry we’re all used to seeing.

This may be called the Thunder, and may have EVDO and HSPA capabilities. I guess we’ll see!

That’s not a real image, btw, just a mock-up.

HTC Touch Diamond Cell Phone to compete with iPhone

HTC announced the Touch Diamond yesterday in London and they’ve managed to pack even more features into a cell phone that many are already calling an iPhone-killer. At a minimum, it’s definitely a competitor.

The Diamond sports a 2.8″ VGA touch-screen running HTC’s own TouchFlo 3D interface and it promises some newer touch and gesture mechanism over the iPhone. A quadband phone, the Diamond is a smartphone with a slew of connectivity options including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, GPS, and HSDPA. It also shows off its auto-righting display technology so you can view pages in either landscape or portrait modes. I’m just touching on its many features too.

Cradlepoint PHS300: Portable WiFi Router connects via Cell Phone conn

Fantastic. Now you can not only have an Internet connection by way of your cell phone’s data connection (tethered to your laptop), but you can also share it to create your very own WiFi hotspot! The Cradlepoint Personal Hotspot 300 is a fully featured WiFi router that uses your mobile phone’s data connection as its conn to the Net.

While it includes an AC adapter, its internal battery can be charged up for full portability. Wherever you want to work, now you can. No longer do you have to find some coffee shop and pay them $10 to get online.

The PHS300 support 802.11b/g computers, and its WiFi router includes a full set of the security and access controls that you’ve come to expect in popular home-based broadband routers.
