Rumor: Facebook gearing up webmail app to compete with Gmail

Facebook vs GmailRight now, Facebook’s messaging system is rather basic and no one in their right mind would use that predominantly over a real e-mail account, nor could they unless all of their contacts existed and used FB. However, rumor is that they are indeed about to announce a totally revamped system that would include an actual e-mail address (ex: [email protected]).

If this is all true, the announcement will come on Mon 15 Nov in advance of the Web 2.0 Summit conference.

Gartner legitimizing iPad for Corporate Use

iPad is here Gartner has recommended that CEOs clear obstacles that prevent IT departments from taking advantage of the iPad according to TUAW.

Stephen Prentice, a VP and Gartner fellow, said in the report: “It is not usually the role of the CEO to get directly involved in specific technology device decisions, but Apple’s iPad is an exception. It is more than just the latest consumer gadget. CEOs and business leaders should initiate a dialog with their CIOs about if they have not already done so.”

Death of The Video Rental Store

Death of Video Rental A few weeks ago, I was sitting at a traffic light by the Hollywood Video store near my home and glanced over at the empty parking lot. This was not an unusual sight because for years the parking lot at the Hollywood Video was always empty. But looking a bit closer, I realized the space was being gutted and prepped for an upcoming Advanced Auto Parts store. The Hollywood Video store was gone for good.

To be honest, I have not entered a video rental store in probably 10 years. But, I still felt a bit sad and nostalgic for all those Friday and Saturday nights back in the early 1990’s that I spent in the video store perusing the shelves for the newest flick with my boyfriend (who is now my wonderful husband). Rows and rows of videotapes, which eventually changed over to DVDs, were all lined up right at our fingertips. We really enjoyed going to the video store.

But then my husband and I stopped going to the video rental store. And it looks like everyone else stopped going too.

100, 300, 800Mbps DSL proven in lab

Broadband chip maker, Ikanos, recently introduced a new DSL technology that allows for connections at 100+Mbps. They claim that rolling out this tech would cost 1/10 of the equivalent in fiber.

There are other vendors who have demonstrated or claimed even more astounding speeds over DSL 300, 700 and 800+ Mbps. But what’s important are the short distances over which those speeds can actually be achieved, and not the easily 10,000+ft that your home may be from a central office.

As much as this is encouraging, I just don’t think copper has that much longer to live unless an effective repeating technology is invented. …
