Review: Online Identity Theft Protection for Dummies

Online Identity Theft Protection for Dummies is a quick read (66 pages) that recommends what you need to do to prevent a problem that has affected millions of Americans, although the exact statistics are in dispute . The first thing that you should know about this book is that it’s written by the CEO and Founder of Access Smart, a company that produces a number of computer security products focused on password management that dovetails very nicely with fighting identity theft. You can currently obtain this book for the price of shipping from Access Smart.

DataWind Unveils World’s Fastest Handheld Device, “PocketSurfer 2”

Pocket Surfer I love it when a gadget company lives up to the hype by “eating their own dog food.” Well today on the main stage at the Canadian Pavilion at 3GSM, DataWind CEO Suneet S. Tuli presented the new PocketSurfer 2. Then he challenged the audience to see if anyone’s handheld device or PDA could download web pages faster than PocketSurfer. Mr. Tuli offered anyone that could beat the PocketSurfer a free device; however, the PocketSurfer held strong with its claim of the fastest speed of any handheld Internet device.

Tuli went on to speak about the forthcoming UK launch of PocketSurfer this spring, which will feature the unprecedented offer of FREE wireless internet service included with every PocketSurfer sold in the UK. This valuable offer, especially when the UK has yet to see a value-for-money unlimited data plan, is made possible by DataWind’s high-speed delivery platform that can reduce pages up to 1/30th of their original size, reducing network load and therefore costs. Apart from the end-user perspective, PocketSurfer also offers mobile operators, for the very first time, the ability to increase and earn new ARPU without charging subscriber fees. Conventionally it is the other way around.

The Geeks love it when a demo goes awry, but we love it even more when a new product works as described in a real world test. We like the look of this new device BUT the product name has a bit to be desired…

D-Link 3G Wireless Mobile Broadband Router

Buy Now!

D-Link started shipping their 3G Wireless Mobile Broadband Router which allows you to share an Internet connection on the go. The Mobile Broadband Router works with cellular broadband service after you insert a compatible EV-DO Internet PC card. The device then allows you to create a wireless broadband network for up to 4 wired PCs or by using Wireless-G networking.

Using the 3G mobile technology, users can quickly set up a secure on-the-go 802.11g network and provides access to the Internet using a cellular signal. For me this is a perfect gizmo for mounting to a car for wireless Internet on the road or you could bring this along on trips for those hotels that actually charge for Internet service!

Netgear SPH101 Skype Wi-Fi Phone

Netgear SPH101 Skype Wi-Fi Phone

In line with our CES theme, the Geeks thought we’d pick another CES Innovation winner from last year… the Netgear Skype Wi-Fi phone. This phone will allow you to call anyone else on Skype, anywhere in the world for free without a PC. You can make and receive Skype phone calls where you have access to a wireless Internet signal.

You can even connect to any landline or mobile phone outside the Skype network for pennies per minute. The Skype Wi-Fi allows you to manage your contact list and display who is available to talk directly on the phone’s screen. Finally, all calls are secure and encrypted with WEP and WPA-PSK Wi-Fi security.

Skype is the world’s fastest-growing Internet communication offering allowing free voice, video and instant messaging communication between users of Skype software of over 136 million registered users.

Pay to be Dugg, Get Paid to Digg

Now that Digg has risen into the stratosphere of the most popular websites, and it also acts like Slashdot in terms of its promotional effect for other websites, along comes along a red-blooded, opportunistic entrepreneur who is trying to capitalize on Digg’s popularity to make a buck (God bless ’em! ;-)). Essentially, if you’ve got an article or site you want to promote, you pay the site, User/Submitter $20 plus $1 per digg desired, and then User/Submitter pays other folks $0.50 per article that they digg. No guarantee that your article will hit the Digg front page, but hey, if you spent $1k or so, you probably will make it. Now how long before Digg shuts down this type of service or changes how they allow diggs?

Mozilla Firefox 2.0 Released

Coolness – Firefox 2.0 has just been released by Mozilla. Like previous Firefox releases, Mozilla has taken useful previously available extensions and integrated them into the base browser itself. I’m on the fence about this, but it’s useful for many, non-techie users who want certain features without having to search for and install anything additional. Personally, I’d like a tight, stable product that I can extend as I need/want. Of course, I’m a feature-junkie too and have about 20 extensions! I’m certainly going to have to wait a bit until those extensions get updated for FF 2.0.

TrendNet HotFlash 802.11g Wireless Adapter and Flash Memory Combo

TrendNet HotFlash 802.11g Wireless Adapter and Flash Memory Combo

This gizmo is Wi-Fi Compliant with 802.11b/g and detects hotsports and connects to Wi-Fi devices. In addition the USB stick doubles as a 512MB flash memory drive and loads driver and utilities from the flash drive automagically.

The hotspot finder displays SSID, Channel, Encryption Types and Signal Strength Information. By the way, the stick even supports WPA2-PSK!

Protect Against Identity Theft

By Stewart S. Miller

No matter what you do online, there is always a risk that someone could glean enough private information about you to usurp your identity. Your financial credit affects nearly every facet of your life, so in order to maintain control over your information, the following tech tips are in order. There are several types of information that are appealing to thieves:

  1. Credit card numbers
  2. CW2 security numbers (those 3- or 4- digit codes on the back of your credit cards)
  3. Credit reports
  4. Social security numbers
  5. Driver’s license numbers
  6. ATM cards
  7. Telephone calling cards
  8. Mortgage information
  9. Dates of birth
  10. Online passwords
  11. PIN numbers
  12. Home/business addresses
  13. E-mail addresses
  14. Phone numbers

Earthlink rolls out city-wide WiFi in Anaheim, CA

For $21.95/month, if you live in Anaheim, CA, you can get an Earthlink account that gives you wireless access city-wide. Earthlink just rolled out the service and while there are some birthing issues, it has promise. Right now, not every spot in the city will have coverage and there are interference problems, especially indoors. The up/download speeds are currently capped at 1Mbps, but there are plans to ratchet that up once the bigger issues are resolved. Stay tuned for WiFi networks in Philadelphia; San Francisco; New Orleans; Pasadena, Calif.; Arlington, Va.; Long Beach, Calif.; and Milpitas, Calif. Hopefully, this will mean more of a competitive incentive to other ISPs to roll out similar services. Earthlink is charging $7.95/day for individuals without accounts, but I think this is a ridiculous fee; I want to see more competition.

Interactive Podcasts

The folks at Waxxi may disagree, but I imagine that sooner or later podcasting would have evolved into or at least had an offshoot that was more interactive in nature as opposed to the current uni-directional flow it currently takes. As you may have guessed, Waxxi is the company that has started producing and presenting interactive podcasts where listeners can call in or IM during the podcast, quite like a call-in radio show. Waxxi takes it one more step and encourages listeners to congregate and carry on the ‘conversation’ in forums after the show. Naturally, the podcast will be moderated so that doesn’t become a shouting match and even transcripts will be provided afterwards.
