Heads-Up Displays get Small with Holographic Projection Tech

Head-up Displays (HUDs) are not exactly a cutting-edge technology any more. However, they still demand a great deal of space. A new HUD based on holographic projection could be squeezed into a space as small as a car’s side mirror.

Just imagine being able to see additional data, graphics or other warnings overlaid on what’s actually in your side mirror or perhaps your rearview mirror. What may be better or at least additional is a HUD display on the windscreen itself.

Mini Portable Motorcycle Helmet Office Home USB Humidifier

Ok, this may seem and look crazy, but hang on a sec… This is a humidifier that’s powered (by USB of course) but the ‘unorthodox’ part is that it’s shaped like a motorcycle helmet. Hehe… maybe it’s too easy to make ‘stuff’ these days.

Yup, so you actually put some water in it (up to 185ml) and either plug it into a USB port or it can run off of 3 AAA batteries. The more I think about how many super air-conditioned offices I’ve worked in, the more I think this would be heaven for my eyes which get dried out after a few hours.

Combination USB Speaker, Alarm Clock, Calendar and Night Light

retro-speakerHow many different things can you combine into 1 device and then of course make it USB-connected and -powered? Obviously the answer is infinite! Here’s another – an alarm clock, with a speaker and a calendar all modeled to look an old-fashioned radio announcer’s microphone (like the one Larry King has as a prop).

The speaker plugs into any 3.5mm audio device (like an iPod or other MP3 player). The clock itself is powered by batteries – another retro ‘feature’. I suppose for the low price, you can’t expect too much. Unfortunately, it’s missing the obvious feature – a microphone!

USB-powered soldering iron

Yes, you read that title right – it’s a USB-powered soldering iron! Nice! And somehwat appropriate when you think about it – chances are if you’re the soldering iron type, then you’re probably in your den or your basement or your bedroom and you’re very close to a computer.

Japanese manufacturer, Thanko has managed to use USB to power a soldering iron. It’s not perfect, as 1 USB port will heat up to about 200-250°C. However, they rigged this iron to use 2 USB ports, so you can plug both in and get it heated up another 100°C or so. It doesn’t stop there – you can also attach a 9V battery to get the temperature all the way up to 500°C.

One more useful feature – an LED light under the tip to help you see what you’re working on. Unfortunately for us Yanks, this is an import, so shipping isn’t cheap, but all together, you can get it under $30.
