Western Digital’s HD Media Player

Buy Now!
This is kinda interesting, but only somewhat. Western Digital has entered the media player game, but in a limited fashion. This box, the TV HD Media Player, takes your USB stick/hard drive and outputs the content on those USB devices via HDMI to your TV @ 1080p.

The price is decent, but for the same or a bit more, you can get into the Media Center game in a bigger way. There is a plethora of media players you can get, including Mvix, Neuros, and quite a few other open source ones.

Neuros LINK – View online Internet video on your TV

Neuros has a new box hitting the general market soon – the Neuros LINK, which lets you get all of that video content that’s sitting on the Internet onto your TV. That means content from sites like YouTube, hulu, NBC, CNN and much more can be streamed over to your TV in HD.

The LINK comes with a ‘keymote’ (looks a bit like the old WebTV keyboards) that you can use to search for content. It even plays music, downloaded movies and displays photos. It is WiFi enabled so you can situate it near your TV without having your network and/or computer near by, but comes with Gigabit Ethernet if you’ve got that accessible, as well as 6 USB ports, S/PDIF audio output, and HDMI out.

LINK will tie in with Neuros’ upcoming Neuros.TV site which will allow you to better organize all of the content you’re interested in from the various sites. LINK is currently available directly from Neuros for $299.

Bose SoundDock® Series II digital music system

Bose has updated their popular iPod SoundDock. Now in the Series II, the SoundDock works with any click-wheel iPod or iPhone (including the 3G models). It charges it while playing, comes with a remote control, and offers that famous Bose sound.

But this is not a 1-trick pony. You can also plug in any other MP3 player other audio source into the SoundDock via the auxiliary input jack.

MvixBOX WDN-2000: NAS Media Server

Mvix has a new NAS box on the market. The MvixBOX WDN-2000 is a 2 drive box that can 2 1TB drives either in a RAID 0 or RAID 1 configuration (either 1 or 2TB net storage). That’s a lot of storage.

But that’s barely the start of it. The MvixBOX sits on your network and offers up network storage via CIFS, AFP, NFS, & WebDev protocols over a GB NIC. You can drag and drop files to your MvixBOX using your computer, and access it in a myriad of ways.

The MvxiBOX comes with an Apache web server, as well as PHP and MySQL capabilities, so you can run a little home website if you wanted.
