Review: Audio Bone Headphones

With a somewhat weird name that doesn’t make sense until you understand how it works, the Audio Bone Headphones operate by conducting sound via the bones in your face directly to your inner ear. This means you don’t actually insert anything into your ears or place anything over your ears. These headphones connect with the bones directly in front of your ears.

I ran the Audio Bone headset through its paces to see if it performed as well as advertised. I was initially surprised to find that there was remarkably more of a frequency response than I had expected, and a side benefit of not having to wear a (potentially) uncomfortable set of ear plugs or headphones, and these were nice and light. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives ended.

YouTube to air full episodes of old TV shows. First up, Star Trek

If Hulu isn’t filling your old TV-content needs, then YouTube may be your savior. So far, they’ve only got a few shows on tap, but they’re (were) pretty popular – Star Trek (the original series), Beverly Hills 90210 and MacGyver.

This is part of Google’s attempt to better monetize YouTube with some new video ad formats.

Interestingly enough, they’ve disabled embedding, so we can’t even place the video on our site.

Amazon Video on Demand

Amazon has updated their Amazon Unbox program. It’s now called Amazon Video on Demand and offers for a fee on-demand streaming of 40,000 TV shows and movies over the Net. You don’t need to purchase a subscription, but can view what you’d like ad-free, whenever you’d like for a small fee. Also, if you have a Sony Bravia TV with Internet Link, you can also use Amazon VoD.

The Amzn VoD service works on Macs and Windows boxes in your usual Web browser suspects. No HD yet, but it’s in the cards. The coolest part of this service – start watching on one machine and pick it up later on a different machine!

Rentals typically last 24 hours, and cost around $4 for a movie, $2 for a tv show. Purchases are somewhere between $10 and $15 each.

TiVo HD XL DVR – 150 hours of HD recording

TiVo has a new HD DVR box – the HD XL that boasts a capacity of 150 hours (about 1 terabyte (TB)) of High Def recording. The HD XL also sports a tri-tuner that lets you record 2 HD channels while watching a 3rd live.

As far as HD support goes, the XL supports 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i, as well as native and hybrid modes, and of course HDMI out.

And since you’ll need a TiVo subscription to get the channel guide info, you will get features such as being able to control your TiVo from anywhere on the Net, transfer shows between TiVos on your home network, save shows on your computer, iPod or even your PSP.

This just scratches the surface of the feature set, so be sure to check out the full list.

Flatwire – clean up your cabling

You may love your gadgets, but hate the mess of cables that it typically involves. If you’ve got a bit of extra cash to spend on the ‘problem’, then you should take a look at FlatWire Technologies which is a company that makes FlatWire, ultra-thin, surface mounted wiring for audio, video, data and even low-voltage lighting.

FlatWire boasts the ability to be applied flat against walls and other surfaces non-invasively, then covered up with the same coloring, make 90 degree turns and run all types of signaling over it. Depending on the type of connection you need, there are specific interconnects that you need to buy.

While FlatWire by itself is more expensive than traditional cylindrical wires, the company touts total installation costs as being competitive. Of course, if you put a high value on aesthetics, then FlatWire will definitely win out.
