Review: Moshi Digital Alarm Clock Radio with Voice-Recognition

Moshi Voice Control Digital AM and FM Clock RadioIf you’re a regular visitor to Gizmos for Geeks, then you know that we love our alarm clocks. And of course, we had to feature a voice-controlled alarm clock, namely the Moshi.

Well Moshi has a new model out, the Moshi Voice Control Digital Clock Radio, that includes an AM/FM radio, and we had a chance to test it out.

Talking Coffee Maker Accepts Verbal Commands

talking coffee makerEven if you’re still way too sleepy to see your coffee maker’s buttons, you can still operate and program this coffeemaker just by using your voice. It asks you questions and you respond. For example, say “Set the coffee brewing time” and this smart cookie will prompt you with “Please say the time”.

Of course, there are still buttons in case you want to go ‘old school’. This maker brews up to 10 cups and lets you remove the carafe mid-brew to snag a quick cup. Plastic filter and carafe are dishwasher-safe.

Talking Remote Meat Thermometer

Certainly not the first meat thermometer out there, and it won’t be the last, but this one from Grill Alert is pretty nifty. Stick the stainless steel probe into the meat and the transmitter wirelessly sends updates to the receiver which you can wear on your belt if you’d like.

The receiver/display shows you information like the temperature, the desired temperature based on the type of meat being cooked. It also has a small database of meat types and recommended temperatures. And the best part is that you don’t need to continuously look at it, because it has voice prompts that say when the meat is almost ready and ready.

In case this one is a bit too pricey for you and you don’t care for the voice and/or wireless features, take a look at some of the other meat thermometers we’ve featured.

GfG’s Article Recap for Week Ending June 26, 2009

Here’s the quick recap for the week:

Google Voice to add number portability?

For those of you have GrandCentral (now Google Voice) accounts, you already know what a great service it is. Since Google bought them, they’ve revamped the service and added lots of new features. However, having to change your number is a bit of a showstopper, particularly for folks who have lots of contacts and trying to inform them all of your # change would be a major PITA.

The potentially good news is that Google may add number portability to the service later this year, so says TechCrunch who got that info from a Google employee. This would be the single biggest thing that drives new customers Google’s way.

By the way, if you’re interested in helping out the cause, you can suggest to Google features you’d like to see in GVoice.

GrandCentral becomes Google Voice – unified messaging, the Google Way

Sweet. I’ve been enjoying GrandCentral for some time now, but was wondering like everyone else what Google was doing with it for the past 2 years or so. Turns out they’ve been hard at work improving what was there and adding new features.

First a recap –

  • GrandCentral gave you 1 number that rang all of your ‘real’ #s: cell, home, work, etc.
  • screening of incoming calls
  • a single voicemail box with Web access to your voicemails;
  • caller-specific voicemail greetings
  • specify which phones rang when certain people called you
  • telemarketer blocking
  • off-times for certain phones

What’s new in Google Voice: …

Voice Controlled Alarm Clock understands 10 spoken commands

Ok, we admit it – we have an obsession with alarm clocks. What we’d really like to see is a build-your-own-alarm-clock store. Honestly, if that existed, I’d easily spend $200-$300 on my dream alarm clock. What? 😉

Anyway, here’s a nice clean looking alarm clock that understands 10 spoken voice commands including the ability to set the time, the alarm, and of course SNOOZE! This blue-backlit clock also has a temperature sensor and can tell you if you’re at your perfect sleeping temp.

Plug it into the wall or put in 3 AAA batteries.
