Get non-Apple sanctioned apps on Cydia

Jay Freeman founded the Cydia app store for iPhones and iPod Touches about 5 months ago, specifically for all those applications that Apple has decided not to accept into their app store. Just one caveat, you need to jailbreak your iPhone/Touch.

One estimate says that 4 million iPhone users have jailbroken their phones so that it works with more than just the Apple App Store (among other things). Now, you know what to do if you want that Google Voice application!

I just wonder when Apple is going to bring the collective legal hammer to bear…

Apple blocks Palm Pres from accessing iTunes

Wow, c’mon Apple – are you really hurting for more $ that you needed to block the relatively small number of Palm Pre users from getting to iTunes?! Of course, this isn’t really targeted at just Palm Pres, but other non-iPod/iPhone devices, but still.

I personally don’t use either iTunes, the desktop software (even when I had an iPod) or the online store, but now I have another reason not to. This is the type of behavior that Microsoft engaged in that alienated a lot of people and helped to give them a bad name. Don’t make the same mistake Apple.

GfG’s Article Recap for Week Ending June 12, 2009

First up in the ‘what the … ?!’ category from the ever-inventive Japaneses were the  Fuwarinka Candy, which changes your body odor by eating a piece of candy or chewing a piece of gum.  Apple had their WWDC conference and rolled out new MacBooks and a new iPhone.

Internet traffic could reach 2/3 of a Zettabyte by 2013 and speaking of the Net, you better grab your Facebook username before it gets snapped up by someone else.

More gadgets: The Lacie d2 Network File Server can store tons of photos and videos on your home network. Amazon released its latest Kindle, the DX, while Microsoft is close to beta testings its new free anti-virus software.

Wrapping things up, we compared some wireless 802.11 USB adapters so you could retro-fit that old laptop or desktop cheapily and easily.

New iPhone 3G S model and OS update announced. Rolls out middle of Jun 09

Also announced at Apple’s WWDC was the latest update to the iPhone OS to 3.0 which will come out in less than 10 days on Jun 17. Oh, but that’s not as big as the new iPhone 3G S model being released 2 days later.

The iPhone 3G S 16GB will be $199 and the 32GB will be $299, while existing 8GBers will sell for $99. New in the 3G S is a digital compass, video recording, voice control and a better camera.

Engadget has some (painfully) detailed coverage of today’s keynote with screenshots, or you can see the whole presentation on Apple’s site.

GfG’s Article Recap for Week Ending June 5, 2009

We kicked off the past week with a look at the Epson WorkForce 310 – a more compact and efficient version of its predecessor. We looked at CaseMate’s charging cases and took a look at the Powerlung lung capacity excercise tool.  For you RC enthusiasts, check out the Mini Cooper Convertible.

If you have pets that constantly want to go outside, then think about training them to ring a doorbell. And if you’re a gamer, a boardgamer that is, then you’ve got to get Settlers of Catan.

On the news side of things, Google have launched scripting to Google Spreadsheets and Microsoft have launched Bing, their newest search engine.  If you’re a Skype user, beware of scammers sending you messages.

FUEL BlackBerry and iPhone Cases – Recharge Your Phone

iPhone FUEL Case

Looking back at some of the portable charging devices we’ve featured over the years, there really hasn’t been one as useful, and perhaps as elegant (that might be subjective), as this. Whilst providing your BlackBerry Bold 9000 or iPhone 3G with a rubber protective case and belt clip, it also has a built in battery to keep your phone going for up to an extra 20 days (BlackBerry) or 250 hours (iPhone) via its built in rechargeable battery which can be activated with the touch of a button.

Many people have to swap batteries constantly to keep their phones going but this does take you offline for a few moments which can be a pain – it’s either that or buying an unsightly solar charger like above!. The FUEL keeps you going without any delay in services and can even be charged simultaneously with your phone by simply plugging it into the wall socket. On the iPhone, docking doesn’t have to mean ditching the case either – it can all be done through it.

Time for the icing on the cake – every purchase comes with a free $5 Starbucks giftcard.

Apple working on new media pad device

Apple is working on a new device that will fall somewhere between a notebook computer and an iPhone/iPod sized device in size. Its aim – a mobile non-phone computer sans keyboard with a bigger screen than an iPod for video-watching; a media pad. Proposed name? i… Pad!

UMPCs and tablet PCs have not taken off the way that manufacturers have hoped, as laptops and smartphones continue to dominate the mobile computing market. Will Apple have better success? Given their recent successes with MacBooks, iPods and iPhones, they certainly have a good track record.

I still think that UMPCs can gain more traction if more of those vendors were willing to make the switch to Linux, as they could be made to run leaner, and thus cheaper.

Microsoft, Verizon to collaborate on an iPhone competitor

Oh Microsoft, for all of your improvements and even advancements over the years, you still manage to make me laugh and scratch my head in amazement. If you really wanted to compete with the iPhone, why didn’t you start a long time, oh say when you first knew they were coming out with the device?

You have a strange habit of coming late to the game and being annoyed that your competing product doesn’t vault immediately to the #1 position.  Your touchscreen ‘MSPhone’ could potentially outsell the iPhone (especially if Apple sticks to just AT&T for a cellular network), but it’s not about to happen any time soon. Good luck – we’ll be watching what happens.
