HP Announces New webOS Smartphones, TouchPad tablet, and Synergy syncing

HP webOS logoHP held a large press event this week to announce and show off their new webOS-based devices, in particular their brand new iPad competitor which is due .

First remember that HP bought troubled Palm and with it, their relatively new webOS mobile operating system. Now HP has unveiled not only 2 new smartphone products, but a brand new tablet as well to compete with the iPad, the (probably intentionally named) TouchPad. They also described and demoed their cloud-based syncing system called Synergy.

Motorola Xoom coming to Verizon Feb 17th at $699

The CES best-of-show Motorola Xoom Tablet is coming to Verizon Feb 17th according to Engadget and will land at a price of $699, $100 better than the intially rumored $799 price tag.

Sure we were pretty put off by the high price, but a quick comparison with the 3G 32GB iPad ($729) shows that Motorola/Verizon aren’t far off on that price given the huge advantage in feature-list they have on the iPad. Of course, they’d sell a lot more if they push down that cost.

So just a few differentiators with its iPad adversary: 160 dpi vs 132 ppi screen, 1GB vs 256MB RAM, 2MP front camera and 5MP back camera vs no cameras on the iPad, 720p video recording, Flash support, HDMI and USB 2.0 ports and 3G and 4G support vs no 4G on the iPad. Ready to buy one now, aren’t you?

10 Highly Anticipated Gadgets for 2011

2011 should be a great year for gadget lovers. From new “iPad killers” to 3D handheld gaming, we expect new innovations and improvements on perfection. Below are our picks for the 10 most highly anticipated gadgets in 2011.

1. Blackberry PlayBook

From what we know about Blackberry phones, RIM’s Blackberry PlayBook may very well be the most impressive non-iPad tablet to hit the market. Like Blackberry phones, the Playbook will be catered to the business market and will have a Dual-core 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and the ability to output 1080p video. Blackberry’s tablet also boasts what RIM calls “true multitasking” and Adobe Flash and Air support.

2. Nintendo 3DS

The device that rocked 2010’s E3 and 2011’s CES will finally hit the shelves this year. The Nintendo 3DS will give gamers the ability to play 3D games without requiring 3D glasses. Boasting graphical performance enhancements over early DS versions , the 3DS will have backward compatibility with their games.

Razer Switchblade Gaming NetbookThe iPad was set to add a new dimension to portable gaming. Did it succeed? Yes and no. CES 2011: Motorola Xoom Tablet Best CES Gadget

Motorola Xoom Android Tablet
The Motorola Xoom tablet won the coveted top honors at the Best of CES awards in Las Vegas and leads the crowded tablet market introduced at CES as the front-runner to compete against the juggernaut Apple iPad.

Motorola Mobility’s hotly awaited tablet computer, the “Xoom,” will be available in the first quarter of the year with a 10.1-inch (25.6-centimeter) screen, which is about the same size as Apple’s iPad, which hit stores in April and has other leading technology companies around the world scrambling to catch up.

Google built their “Honeycomb” software specifically to power tablet computers and Motorola believes that helps enable the Xoom as the next generation of tablets.

CES 2011: Dell shows off 7″ Streak tablet. Could be a 10″ later too

Dell Streak 7 Android tabletYup, we’re featuring yet another tablet, but let’s face it – that’s the hot product this year kicked off of course by the iPad last year. This time it’s the Dell Streak 7, a 4G tablet that will run T-Mobile’s 4G network.

As the name implies, the Streak 7 is a 7″ tablet with a multi-touch 800×480 screen, Android (of course), Adobe Flash Player (suck on that Apple), WiFi, and front- and rear-facing cameras. Runs on the now very popular Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor, and has 16GB of storage expandable via SD cards.

There’s a Streak 10 (a 10″ version) that may make an appearance later this year. And of course, you can get the 5″ Dell Streak mini (on AT&T) for $99 with a 2-year contract.

CES 2011: Verizon getting 10 new 4G LTE devices

So far, this seems like a very smartphone- and 4G-heavy CES. For example, Verizon announced 10 new 4G LTE devices including smartphones, notebooks and tablets.

Smartphones include the LG Revolution, the HTC Thunderbolt, one from Samsung , and the Motorola Droid Bionic (when are they going to run out of relevant names for that line eh?).

Motorola has the smart-looking Xoom Android 3.0 tablet (which we’ll cover later). And Samsung has the Galaxy Tab (Android 2.2). By the way, what tablet today besides the iPad isn’t running Android?

HP/Compaq has 2 4G notebooks and Samsung has a tiny 4G LTE mobile hot spot.

These 4G devices will show up on Verizon as early as March.

Daniusoft DVD Ripper for Mac

Review: Daniusoft’s DVD Ripper for Mac

Daniusoft DVD Ripper for the Mac Daniusoft provided the Geeks with a license of the DVD Ripper for Mac title for review. The aptly named utility provides the ability to rip DVDs to many of the popular formats plus the software allows you to rip background music from DVDs.

There are two types of DVD ripping software. First, there is the simplistic ripper that provides the user with very few options and clicks needed to start the process of ripping a DVD. Secondly, there are expert rippers that provide users the ability to modify everything from the bit and frame rates for video to the bit and sample rates for audio of DVDs being ripped. Daniusoft has walked the line and provided the best of both worlds in that you can simply drag a DVD and click “Start” to begin the rip; however, Daniusoft has also provided the options with presets (including Apple TV 2, Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy) to tweak the video and audio during a rip.
