Smart Alarm Clock Knows When to Wake You

By Nick Farrell

Here is news of an alarm clock which works out when it is best to wake you up. Notice it doesn’t tell you when you need to wake up; instead it reads your brainwaves and work out when is the best time for you. The gadget, SleepSmart, works on the principle that you have a regular sleep pattern of 90 minutes going from lighter to deeper states. A prototype has been finished by the students at Brown University, Rhode Island, who have formed a company to promote their invention. It is not clear when it will be in the shops.

iHome Clock Radio Dock with Dual Alarm for Apple iPod

Clock Radio for iPod

I think it’s time to replace my clock radio. Why? It doesn’t act as a dock for my iPod so I can listen to my tunes when I wake up in the morning! But this model from iHome does. Just dock your iPod (almost any model) in to the iHome Clock Radio and you can set it up play as your alarm in the morning (or afternoon if you’re like me). This model also comes with an AM/FM tuner in case you get tired of your own music, and a buzzer in case you’ve got my disease and can’t wake up in the morning.

With a decent 6W of power and stereo speakers, you should have enough juice to raise at least the partially dead. And again, if you’re like me and try to put the alarm clock far away from the bed so you have to get out of bed to hit snooze, you may like the remote control.

Clocky Robotic Alarm

Clocky Robotic Alarm

So my business partner, Chief Gadgeteer, has what most people would call a problem. You see, once CG goes to bed he has issues waking up in the morning. He has tried several techniques including multiple alarm clocks and placing alarm clocks across the room. Here comes Clocky the wheeled alarm clock to the rescue.

This little wonderful wheeled alarm clock started as an engineering student’s project. Having trouble waking up herself, Gauri Nanda developed Clocky to shriek annoyingly and effectively, waking you up. The fun doesn’t end there, kiddies. It leaps off of your night stand, and drives around your room, making random turns and racing away from your grasp. Now you have to get out of bed and hunt the little bugger down to turn it off.

Alarm-Clock Natural Light Lamp

Alarm-Clock Natural Light Lamp

Don’t be jolted awake by an alarm or radio. Let dawn-like light wake you gently. Forget a noisy buzzer or early morning DJ – this alarm clock/lamp wakes you naturally with light that mimics sunrise by going from dim to bright. The light’s 72 bright-white LEDs wash over you to chase away winter blues (effective against Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)). When used for reading, they’re easier on your eyes than regular fluorescent or incandescent lights.

Lego Darth Vader Clock Gets You Up in the Morning

I struggle to get up in the morning, but with a huge LEGO Darth Vader or Stormtrooper standing over my bed I know I’d get out of bed a lot faster.

These ironically cute alarm clock figures are based on their LEGO minifigure counterparts scaled up to 8 inches. Their chests double up as clocks.

For $30 you can get yourself one of these with batteries included.

(Oh yeah, you know we love alarm clocks!)
