Google’s Gmail team has put together a security checklist that you can use to double-check that you’ve taken most of the steps to protect yourself and your Gmail account against hackers (or bad guys as they put it!).
Even if you think that you’re pretty computer savvy, this is worth quickly going through. A nice thing about it is that as long as you’re using the same browser when you return to it, it should remember the boxes that you’ve checked off.
About the only thing I would have added is that if you’re on a public computer and using Firefox and/or Chrome, you could use their anonymous modes to access your Gmail account so that no private data is retained on the machine.
