Toshiba Plans SED displays

We recently covered Samsung’s OLED displays from the CES show, and just noticed that Toshiba is set to launch televisions with a display type that rivals plasma sets. The flat-panel technology is called surface-conduction electron emitter display (SED). Toshiba has been working with Canon on this technology; Canon provided the electron-emission and microfabrication technologies. We can hope to see SED televisions under full production in 2006 at a minimum of 50″. Toshiba claims that SED screens will provide better quality and lower power consumption than plasma displays.

Of course, at this point in time, OLED and electronic ink displays can only be used in small screens, but the goal is that they can be built for use in TVs and laptops. So they hardly compete with SED displays.
