YouTube to air full episodes of old TV shows. First up, Star Trek

If Hulu isn’t filling your old TV-content needs, then YouTube may be your savior. So far, they’ve only got a few shows on tap, but they’re (were) pretty popular – Star Trek (the original series), Beverly Hills 90210 and MacGyver.

This is part of Google’s attempt to better monetize YouTube with some new video ad formats.

Interestingly enough, they’ve disabled embedding, so we can’t even place the video on our site.

Get drunk – still send mail safely

Oh yeah, you read that right. Let’s say you go out one night, and have a really good time, and then decided to come home and oh send some e-mails. I’ll bet you regretted those e-mails the next day. Wouldn’t it be cool if your e-mail client could stop your drunken e-mailing? Well, a Google employee named Jon came up with a little feature that you can find in the Gmail Labs section of Gmail called aptly enough, Mail Goggles. Love it.

It works simply enough – enable it, specify a time window, and then do some simple math problems before Gmail will let you send that e-mail. To enable, just head into your Gmail account and click on the little green beaker icon at the top of the page, and scroll down to Mail Googles.

Amazon Video on Demand

Amazon has updated their Amazon Unbox program. It’s now called Amazon Video on Demand and offers for a fee on-demand streaming of 40,000 TV shows and movies over the Net. You don’t need to purchase a subscription, but can view what you’d like ad-free, whenever you’d like for a small fee. Also, if you have a Sony Bravia TV with Internet Link, you can also use Amazon VoD.

The Amzn VoD service works on Macs and Windows boxes in your usual Web browser suspects. No HD yet, but it’s in the cards. The coolest part of this service – start watching on one machine and pick it up later on a different machine!

Rentals typically last 24 hours, and cost around $4 for a movie, $2 for a tv show. Purchases are somewhere between $10 and $15 each.

Gimme!

Picasa 3 is out with lots of new features

Picasa was already a pretty damn good application for managing photos and even videos. Version 3 of Picasa has even more cool features. Here’s a taste:

  • Retouch your pics with a little airbrushing without needing to know Photoshop
  • movie editing and creating using your photos, movies and music
  • Upload your pics to Picasa Web (sync too)
  • Add text to your photos.

There’s more… but just download it and find out first hand, or read to your heart’s content over at Google.

Best Buy charging $30 to remove bloatware from computers

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – computers are complicated, even for folks like me who are in the business. With that in mind, Best Buy has discovered another way to mint money – charging folks a small premium to remove the bloatware that the major computer makers install on their computers.

While some of the software can be considered useful or helpful, what I’ve found is that I rarely use it, and so much of it runs as an always-on service that uses some amount of additional hardware resources. It all adds up.

Google enters Web browser market with Chrome

Google sure knows how to light up the news sites and blogosphere – release a brand new Web browser! Called Chrome, it’s Google’s foray into a once-crowded market that is now dominated by just 2 players (at least on Windows) – Microsoft and Mozilla.

Everyone else has reported on and given their opinion, so why not another?! I did download and test out Chrome. I would have been disappointed if I was not impressed by at least one feature of a brand new Google product and the big G did not let me down.

BeatThat.com – submit deals, make money

A new deals website pays you to submit deals on popular products (currently only in 6 electronics categories and 511 products). BeatThat.com also simply rates the vendors in 3 categories (green, yellow and red) based on their rankings at a few other big sites such as Amazon.com and Shopping.com.

No idea how much you get paid for submitting deals, so I’m guessing that they want to keep that quiet until you submit stuff, probably because it’s not that much!

Fotoviewr – turn your Flickr photos into a slideshow

Fotoviewr is a new (free) Web-based service to turn your Flickr (or SmugMug) photos into a cooler interactive slideshow for your friends and family. You could easily get a slideshow set up in less than a minute with Fotoviewr – just plug in a Flickr/SmugMug username, then select the photoset you want to display and third, the type of slideshow you want. Fotoviewr has 6 different types of slideshows from a carousel to a wall of photos to a pile of photos on the floor.

While I love Flickr for its clean website, I find it a bit slow. Fotoviewr speeds things up by preloading the photos and making it significantly faster to browse. Fotoviewr has also built an application for you Facebook junkies.

Obama Takes #1 Spot on Twitter

While John McCain is still learning how to use email (we’re not kidding), his U.S. Presidential competition has completely mastered the micro-blogging service Twitter.

This month, American presidential candidate Barack Obama dethroned Kevin Rose from Digg.com and became the most popular person on Twitter. According to Twitterholic, a website that measures the “followers” of Twitter accounts, Barack Obama has over 58,000 followers.
