Automatic Garage Door Closer

Automatic Garage Door Closer

Ok, ‘fess up – how many times have you forgotten to close your garage door? Too many times, eh? Well, worry no more about luring thieves into your home by getting the automatic garage door closer. It might sound funny, (right out of the Jetsons maybe), but this is no joke. The closer automatically closes the door after a user-specified amount of time. It’s that simple. It’s not that tough to install either: mount a small sensor on your garage door. The sensor talks to a receiver on a wall console, which is hooked into your garage door switch. Since the wall console already accepts commands wirelessly, it can also commands from a keychain remote.

Wireless Thermometer Floats in Pools

Wireless Thermometer Floats in Pools

A picture is worth a thousand words. I love the look of this thing, plus everytime I think of going to the pool to fish the thermometer out of the side to check the temperature, I figure I really need this gadget. This waterproof thermometer floats in your pool (or a pond, lake, spa, even your bathtub if you’d like), and has a nice large display for quickly seeing the current temp. But it gets better – it has a wireless transmitter that pushes the info to any receiver that uses 433 MHz-frequency sensors. The Waterproof Floating Thermometer has three selectable channels, so it can be used in conjunction with other 433 MHz-frequency sensors. At $39.99, it’s a steal.

Ambient Devices 5-Day Weather Forecaster

Ambient Devices 5-Day Weather Forecaster

We’ve featured other weather forecasting/reporting devices before, but I really like this one. It has that elegant, executive look to it and is nice and compact. The 5-day Weather Forecaster from Ambient Devices receives zip-code specific info from Accuweather via Ambient’s wireless nationwide network. The LCD screen has clear icons for various weather conditions and the thing that I really like is that the temperatures are not only displayed as numbers, but in a graph format, so you can get a feel for how the weather is trending. Must be the engineer in me…

Home Theater Lighting Solution

Home Theater Lighting Solution

How do you know if you’re a true audiovisual enthusiast?

Here’s a quick quiz:

Do you think the person who invented DVD rental by mail should be nominated for a Nobel Prize?

Do you feel that “volume” is something you should feel as well as hear?

Do you think the words “TV” and “too big” should never appear in the same sentence?

Are your goldfish named Dolby and THX?

Can you communicate passionately using nothing but acronyms and conjunctions?

Could you weave a hammock out of all the cables snaking around behind your components?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are an audiovisual enthusiast. And even if you didn’t, you still have a home theatre, whether it’s a simple TV in the den or an expertly outfitted screening room. Either way, an INSTEON A/V Solution will add professional panache for a proletarian price.

Remote-Control Camera Pan Base

Remote-Control Camera Pan Base

The Remote-Control Camera adds panning ability to any camera (wired or wireless). This gizmo can pan your cameras up to 370 degrees and you can remotely control the movement from up to 150 feet away.

Too bad the camera base cannot be controlled from a web site. There are several products that have that ability, but pricing is a little spooky on them.

INSTEON ToggleLinc V2 Dimmer

INSTEON ToggleLinc V2 Dimmer

What’s this? The Gizmo of the Day is a light switch?

We’re not being anti-climatic… actually, the Gizmo of the Day is perhaps the smartest toggle style dimmer switch because it is INSTEON-enabled. Smarthome finally released the toggle-style dimmer a couple days ago for purchase and the Geeks decided to feature even though it’s still a pre-order item (we tend to wait until you can get your hands on a gizmo before featuring). Personally, I’m still a fan INSTEON SwitchLinc V2 Dimmer fan.

Geek’s SmartLabs Inc. Visit

The Geeks were invited to visit SmartLabs’ 60,000 square foot facility in Irvine, California for research for an upcoming article on Gizmos for Geeks. We were able to tour the facility and walk through their enormous factory warehouse of gizmos as well as the INSTEON home automated idea house. In addition to the tours, we were able to spend time with Dan Cregg who is the Chief Technical Officer and regarded as the “Father of INSTEON” as well as Ken Fairbanks who is the VP of Business Development. Both Cregg and Fairbanks were highly knowledgeable and able to evangelize the INSTEON technology and product lines. In fact, everyone we talked with at SmartLabs really seemed to know the products. This is a company made up of gadgetologists (or as we like to call them… gizmatologists).

Nuvo Essentia 6-Source 6-Zone Amplifier

Nuvo Essentia 6-Source 6-Zone Amplifier

Being a huge fan of HAI and needing a whole-house audio solution, I was excited to run across this 6-source, 6-zone Nuvo amplifier that allows you to control your music through any HAI touchscreen in your house. 6-source means you can connect up to 6 different audio inputs and 6-zone refers to the ability for 6 different zones and 6 different musical tastes to coexist in one house!

The NuVo Essentia Audio Distribution System can also be purchased as a kit with six in-wall keypads for local room control without using an HAI system.
