Iomega Media Xporter Drive – USB Drive compatible with Xbox and PlayStation

Iomega is still around (was recently acquired by EMC) and are producing new products such as the Media Xporter Drive. It is essentially a USB 2.0 portable hard drive that is compatible not only with Windows and Mac PCs, but also with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles.

This is geared for those homes with those consoles but no media center, media streamer or PC attached to their AV centers. The Media Xporter Drive comes with software that can help you convert your multimedia content for perfect display on your game console. It supports formats such as QuickTime, AVI, VOB, JPG, MP3 and more.

Of course, the Media Xporter Drive is at heart still a hard drive, so feel free to use it just like that too!

Remote Control Jousting Knights

One of my all-time favorite arcade games is Joust, but I’m just a poor Geek and can’t afford full-sized arcade games like the Chief Gadgeteer so I have to settle with these little remote control Jousting Knights.

Each set includes two R/C horses, lances, and two brave riders. The goal is simple: knock your opponent off their horse. Because when you do, their control over their horse stops (so they can’t cheat!) All you need is floor space, and you can form tournaments of your own. Since tournaments usually lasted days and days, think of all the work you can ignore as you joust! Could a nobler goal than procrastination exist for the office? We think not. Tilt away, ladies and gentlemen, tilt away!

Wii Fit

There have been numerous reports of Geeks using the Nintendo Wii in their exercise regime to lose weight. The interactivity of the gaming platform has in no doubt contributed to the incredible sales figures related to the Wii. Now, the Wii Fit is poised to be the next big seller in the gaming market and is scheduled to be released on May 21st. If you want this product, you should definitely consider pre-ordering (I just pre-ordered mine!), otherwise you might have to deal with some lines and the possibility of the product being sold out.

Why the Wii Fit? Why is this product probably going to sell out quickly? The Wii Fit includes a ground-breaking controller pad for the Wii console called the Wii Balance Board that allows you to lean to block soccer balls, swivel hips to power hoop twirls or balance and hold the perfect yoga pose. The Wii Balance Board figures out your body’s overall balance and ties this information to the included games. Using Wii Fit for daily tests, you can evaluate and track progress of Body Mass Index (BMI) which is a weight evaluation based on a ratio of weight to height as well as your Wii Fit Age which is measured by factoring the user’s BMI reading, testing the user’s center of gravity and using the results of various tests.

Kids who DON’T play video games are more at risk of trouble

Aha! I knew it. We already knew that there’s no link between video games and violent behavious, but it also turns out that kids who don’t play video games have a statistically higher risk of getting into trouble than those who do. Here’s a video interview of 2 Harvard profs who’ve done the research and written a book.

We were always suspicious (in our own boyish ways) of other boys who didn’t play (video games or sports or just horsed around). Now we know; science has shown the way.

Rock Band’s first album, Priest’s Screaming for Vengeance

Harmonix announced that the 1st album will be Judas Priest’s Screaming for Vengeance. Sweet. This is the 1st in hopefully what will be many albums that they release. If you’re into NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal), then you’ll love the choice. IMHO (my opinion only, so no need to argue), this is one of the best Priest albums. Next up, Def Lep’s Pyromania, or Iron Maiden’s The Number of the Beast?

I feel that if Rock Band is to have some sort of lasting future, that this is exactly what they need to continue doing, but of course they also need to release lots and lots of singles, especially current and new ones to add to the variety and excitement.

I’m so excited, I pulled up some Priest to listen to on Rhapsody!

Air-Musician Virtual Guitar

Strap this wristband on and pretend to be the rock and roll god that only you see yourself as being as you virtually play the Air-Musician Virtual Guitar. Once you’re strapped in you only need to push a button to select a song then you strum away.

Every time you move your wrist you automatically play the next chord in the song. With a bit of rhythm you’ll be playing so well your friends will think you took a crash course with Steven Tyler and bought yourself an invisible guitar.

Cological Marble Run Construction Set

Imported from Japan, the Cological Marble Run Construction Set allows you to create custom courses for your marbles using mini rolling cars to whacking mallets to zig-zag tracks. When the marble reaches the end the flag pops up and plays a little song.

With 23 different mechanisms for moving marbles and 97 parts in total, the construction of custom tracks will keep you busy for a while. There is a manual included to get you off on the right foot but… you need to be able to read Japanese!

Rock Band coming to the Wii

For you Wii fans that felt left out in the cold because Rock Band didn’t come your way, then your prayers have been answered. June 22 is the magic date you’ll need to save $170 for. Harmonix (owned by MTV Networks) announced yesterday that you’ll get your wishes and you’ll even get 5 songs that will be exclusive to the Nintendo Wii version.

BTW, in case you didn’t know already, Rock Band rocks!

Mini Solar-Powered Car

Mini Solar-Powered Car Solar cars are, unfortunately, still in the research and development phase, although we saw one recently that drove from Texas to New York in 5 days. Despite being impressive, it’ll likely be years before we have one sitting in the driveway, charging. Until then this working miniature model will have to keep us entertained.

The world’s smallest solar powered car – it zooms along when the sun shines on the solar panel. No batteries – it gets its power just from the sun. No assembly required. Measures a tiny 3.3 x 2.2 x 1.4 cm. When the sun shines on the solar panel, the panel makes electricity that turns the motor and the wheels. A fun demonstration of solar power. Will also work when close to a strong artificial light source. Not for children under 3 years old, due to small parts.
