SmileCheck Technology Coming to a Digital Camera Near You

SmileCheck Technology FotoNation, a provider of embedded imaging solutions for the imaging industry, announced the availability of licensing for “SmileCheck.” SmileCheck is a new technology to detect smiles in portrait photos taken by digital cameras and camera phones and is being debuted at the 2008 Photo Marketing Association (PMA) Convention, held this week from January 31-February 2, 2008 in Las Vegas.

SmileCheck enables a new type of picture taking mode called “Smile Shutter” in digital cameras. Once the camera’s trigger button is depressed, the shutter is not engaged until smiles are detected on all faces within the frame, ensuring photos with all smiles. Markets for this new technology include high volume portrait studios, school and event photographers, and identity photography, such as passports and badge ID cards for simplifying workflow.

The World’s Most Famous Photoshop Fakes

All professional photographs are usually touched-up a tiny bit. Sometimes specks of dust need to be removed, maybe the image needs a little bit of color correction or even a dose of red eye reduction.

Then there are images that get completely ‘shopped (aka Photoshopped). For example, look at the terrible image of Oprah to the right from a 1989 issue of TV Guide. Oprah’s head doesn’t even look natural transplanted on Ann-Margret’s body. It’s ridiculous!

While “Photoshopping” an image might be a creative opportunity for artistic photographers and designers, for news editors, it can all be a bit of a nightmare once the public finds out.

Here are 7 of the most famous Photoshop fakes according to Photopreneur.com.

Eye-Fi SD Card with WiFi (wireless) access

Eye-Fi SD Card

Although nominally a Wi-Fi enhancement for your digital camera, The Eye-Fi card is an SD card that currently goes up to 2GB of capacity. This is definitely new, if not revolutionary. This means no more either having to hook up your camera to your computer OR extract the card and plug it into a card reader attached to your computer in order to download your pictures. Just get them instantly from your camera as long as you’re in range of your WiFi home network.

The Eye-Fi SD card just needs to be configured to work on your home Wi-Fi network and away you go. It currently does not work with hotspots which typically require logging in with a username and password, but that may be a blessing in disguise as you don’t want your private photos exposed to a public network. The other convenience that Eye-Fi gives you is instant uploading to your favorite Photo sharing website such as Fotki, Shutterfly, dotPhoto, webshots, phanfare, Picasa Web albums, Flickr, TypePad, Wal-Mart, snapfish, VOX, smugmug, facebook, photobucket, Kodak Gallery, and Sharpcast. Quite an impressive list.
