LaCie d2 Network File Server

Lacie d2 Network File Server

LaCie have long been a provider of top hard drive solutions and the d2 is no exception – this is a professional file server built for office use as it allows up to 50 users to be connected, with a maximum of 15 being able to use it at any one time. Available in 500GB, 1TB or 1.5TB  – Amazon appears to have a 2TB version also, but LaCie confusingly doesn’t display this on their website. This should see any small office run perfectly and would also be suitable for the power home user that wants more storage and flexibility in their wireless network.

The d2 supports Windows, Mac and Linux users alike and supports multimedia playback through iTunes and other DLNA multimedia devices. Naturally, TimeMachine is supported for Mac users. Two (2) expansion ports on the back allow for additional storage to be connected to the d2, as well as data imports and external backups all via USB 2.0 or eSATA. A nice touch is the inclusion of a BitTorrent-compatible torrent server.

Netgear Network Storage Device

Wireless networks between computers and devices around the home, and office have become very popular recently, and this is a must-have addition to anyone’s network: the Netgear Network Storage Device. Sunglasses with built-in wireless Bluetooth headset

Okay, so we’ve all heard of those glasses made by Oakley that have a built-n MP3 player, but sunglasses with built-n wireless Handsfree over Bluetooth – is this just taking it one step too far? I don’t think so.

With a talk time of 3.5 hours and a standby time of 90 hours (rechargeable via internal battery) there’s just nothing comparable on the market – and all for under $50. The glasses themselves are quite stylish; probably as good as any other $50 pair of normal sunglasses you can get – they have a matt black finish with smoke mirrored lenses.

With a temperature range of -10C to 50C, you can use these pretty much anywhere in the world. Perhaps these will be next year’s skiing must have, that is if you think you can manage calling people whilst you’re coming down the slope at break-neck speed!

In conclusion, a good buy, as long as you don’t mind walking around looking like someone out of the Matrix. And, in all fairness, they’re not quite as good looking as your pair of D&G designer glasses. Another gadget that combines 2 of our daily necessities into one simple, stylish product. Nice.

Qualcomm’s Gobi platform – multi-carrier wireless card

Qualcomm’s Gobi platform will let you access multiple carriers’ wireless data services. With Gobi, you won’t need to have separate cards and/or built-in chips in your notebook to get online.

Qualcomm is already partnering with Sony to put Gobi chips into Vaio P notebooks. Currently, Gobi will work at speeds up to 5.7Mbps which is not shabby at all.

The big question is whether or not carriers like Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, etc will start offering pay as you go or smaller window plans as opposed to the monthly plans that you find today that typically also come with yearly lock-in agreements.

If Gobi gets into enough netbooks, then it should pressure the carriers to do just that.
