Kinect Can Finally See Lazy Gamers

Microsoft Kinect Eurogamer reports that Microsoft fixed a major Kinect implementation issue by allowing Kinect to recognize players who are seated. The method Microsoft used to create skeletal models in the software set the base node at the bottom of the spine. When people were seated with knees in front of their pelvis, Kinect got confused. Microsoft engineers modified the base node from the bottom of the spine to the back of the neck.

Previously, developers had to specifically code for lazy (sitting) gamers but this functionality is now built into the system. Unfortunately these changes will miss most of the peripheral’s launch line-up.

Rock Band 3 to Feature Keyboards

Rock Band 3

As rumored, Rock Band 3 will feature a MIDI keyboard that you can use outside of the game as well. RB3 will also have some re-imagined guitars designed to work with the game’s “Pro” mode which is an intermediate gameplay mode that is supposed to be somewhere between the game’s original accessories and actual musical instruments.

Rock Band 3 is slated for release by the end of this year (2010).

iCade for iPad turns your iPad into a retro arcade cabinet!

icade for ipadIf you’re a retro-gamer, then you’re going to need to get an iPad and iCade, which is a litte mini arcade frame for your iPad to slide into. Then you can play thousands of old school, classic games like Donkey Kong, Q-bert, Pac-Man & Space Invaders with a joystick and classic buttons.

Naturally, the app for the iPad is free, but the iCade will run you $150, a small price to pay for the fun and memories you’ll have. Of course, your iPad also recharges while you play and there’s a little speaker in the cabinet for more authentic sounds.

By the way, in case you didn’t catch on, April Fool’s! Too funny ThinkGeek.

Ruik’s Cube Goes Electronic with a Touchscreen

If you’re not interested in trying something completely new from Rubik (like the Rubik 360), but maybe want an upgrade on your 35-yr old Rubik’s Cube, then why not get the ‘electronic’ version? Yup, there is now a touchscreen Rubik’s Cube.

No need to rotate the sides any more. Just swipe your finger along the face, and the colors update instantly. There is memory so that it picks up exactly where you left it. A bit pricey, but hey that’s the cost of progress!

Lego Model of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater

As a kid, my favorite thing to build with Lego were houses, believe it or not. So I really wish that Lego had these ‘architecture’ sets back in the day, but now they do. Take the Frank Lloyd Wright house, Fallingwater. Here it is in stunning Lego detail. Fantastic.

This replica comes with a booklet filled with details on its design and history. It measure almost a foot wide.

This isn’t the only architecture set that Lego makes. You can also get models of the Guggenheim Museum, the Taj Mahal, the Empire State Building, the Seattle Space Needle and more.

Perplexus – 3D maze puzzle

Yep, despite video games being the choice of game today, puzzles have not died either. Take a look at Perplexus (nice name) which is a spherical 3-D maze with a ball bearing that you need to navigate around the maze.

There are even ‘save points’ so that you can put Perplexus down for a bit while you rest your tired little brain.

Star Wars Brain Training Game

starwars-brain-trainingTaking a page out of Star Wars mythology, this game/toy/trainer (take your pick) claims to help you develop your powers of concentration. The Star Wars Brain Training Game reads your brainwaves while you try to move the ball in the tube up or down.

Apparently, the headset can differentiate between alpha, beta, gamma, and delta brainwaves. Given the price tag, there’s probably some truth to this. We’d like to test it out first to find out though!

Hasbro gets some help from Google on new online version of Monopoly

Google and Hasbro have teamed up to develop a new online version of Monopoly that makes use of Google Maps. Monopoly City Streets features many of the same concepts as traditional Monopoly – you start off with a set amount of money and can buy/build houses and hotels. But now you can also build skyscrapers and stadiums, as well as ‘hazards’ to slow down your competitors.

Monopoly City Streets launches today, but must be experiencing either too much traffic or some early bugs as the site was either inaccessible or not loading completely.
