Book Review: Head First HTML5 Programming

Book cover - Head First HTML5Unless you’ve been under a rock the past 2 years or so, you’ll know that HTML5 is the next generation of the markup language that has been powering the Web since its inception. Tech publisher O’Reilly has been busy ensuring that they do their part to educate the Web developers and programmers of the world and they accordingly have a slew of books on HTML5, one of which is in their Head First series.

Head First HTML5 Programming is really that – a book about programming, specifically in JavaScript. It is expected that you already know HTML and CSS, and while some JavaScript would be good, it’s not a requirement. The book starts off with a quick intro to HTML5, but by page 20, you’ll already have seen some JavaScript code.

The Energy Detective – real-time electricity usage monitor

In our time of higher energy and household costs, it’s a good idea to monitor those costs closely and see where we can cut back, not to mention that saving energy is just a good, green practice. For example, Kill-a-Watt has a number of products to directly monitor whatever is plugged into it, but how do you monitor usage in your entire house?

TED, The Energy Detective, is a real-time, electricity monitor. TED monitors your energy usage and displays the info in a simple, LCD display. It even jacks into your PC and lets you monitor historical usage with a custom software app (additional). It’s near real-time, with no more than a 2-second delay between events and reporting, and it updates every second.

So that your entire house is monitored, TED has to be installed directly into your home’s power circuits, so you’ll either need to be very familiar with electrical systems or hire an electrician for the 15 minute install. TED has a few different models. The base model (TED1000) is about $140 and the TED Model 1001 has a USB interface.

Review: Schick Quattro Titanium with Trimmer

It may be a bit amusing to think of, but the competition amongst shaving companies is fierce. Consider this – it’s well known that Gillette spent over $750 million on the R&D costs for the Mach3 razor. But I’m here to discuss the latest from Schick which as far as I know is a first. It’s a safety razor with replaceable blades and a powered trimmer on the other end (at the far end of the stylized marketing photo).

The Quattro Titanium with Trimmer (there’s also a model without the trimmer) sports a 4-blade razor with a 5th blade on the back of those main 4 for edging. These blades are titanium coated for reducing nicks and cuts. I still maintain that cuts still happen, despite the added lotion strips, etc., but I’ll certainly take anything that vendors throw in to mitigate the possibility.

WattStopper’s Isole IDP-3050 Smart Surge Protector

Here’s the next logical step in smart surge protectors, the Isole IDP-3050 uses an infrared sensor to tell if you’re in the room or not and will shut off 6 of its 8 outlets automatically. That means you could plug stuff like your PC into 1 of the other 2.

The timing on how long it takes to shut off can be adjusted from anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 minutes. It’s pricier than some of the other ‘smart’ surge protectors, but the motion sensor definitely makes for a big coolness factor.

Price: $90.00

Mac Mini RAM Upgrade Tutorial

Want to upgrade the RAM in your Mac Mini? You can definitely save a few bucks by buying a stripped down Mac Mini and upgrading the RAM yourself. But before you can install that extra RAM, you’ll need to take a walk down to your local hardware store and grab a couple putty knifes. Thanks to the Mac Mini, the putty knife is now becoming part of the standard set of essential computer hardware tools.

Traditionally, Apple computers have easily come apart with a few screws and levers. In fact, some Apple machines, like the PowerMac G5, almost come apart entirely without tools. However, brute force, patience and a putty knife are required to crack open the Mac Mini.

Handheld Multi-Tool Includes 30 Tools in One

Handheld Multi-Tool Includes 30 Tools in One

With Father’s Day around the corner, the Geeks felt like paying homage to the holiday with a week’s worth of Father’s Day gadget gifts starting with, what else… a tool! Even if men don’t know how to operate the sharpest tool in the shed, we pretend that we do until we either hurt ourselves or get in way over our heads on a project to the point of having to call a contractor.

Anyway, this handheld multi-tool includes 30 tools in one (grr, grr, grr ala Tim the Toolman Taylor)… one tool for everyday of the month! Of course, for most of us dad-types, the Bottle Opener will be the most used tool in this multi-tool!
