Energizer Inductive Charger Only Requires Near Contact

Energizer has released their inductive-charging alternative to the Powermat – they call it the Energizer IC2B-US Qi-Enabled 3 Position Inductive Charger. We’ll call it the Energizer Inductive Charger for short.

The gizmo is compatible with all devices that use Qi technologies for charging. At the moment this appears to consist of covers for the iPhone 3G/3GS/4 and Blackberry Curve 8900 but Energizer have announced the Inductive Charging mat as a forward-looking product so we should see more accessories available with it too.

The charging plate is plugged into your computer’s USB for power and has 2 inductive slots for charging to commence, and allows movement of devices while in position (although by how much is unclear). LED lights indicate charging activity.

The importance of Energizer’s backing of the inductive charging sector is important. Unlike some of the other smaller producers, Energizer has weight in the power sector so hopefully more larger companies will see a stable future in these charging technologies and develop more products for their use. Another question to be answered is whether there is going to be a universal format for inductive charging; are we seeing the beginnings of another HD-DVD/Blu-Ray war?
